Hi all,
I am due to change my car in Sept (currently have an A45) and I am looking for something still reasonably quick but a little bigger and a little less bumpy. I have been looking at all different kinds as I keep changing my mind. I won't go into the other car choices here as I have a specific question regarding 3 Maserati choices.

I have been looking at the GT, Quattroporte and the newer Ghibli. On paper the petrol Ghibli is quicker that both the QP and the GT whilst averaging about 10mpg greater than both. I know the tech will be newer (better) in the Ghibli but does anyone have any experience of these cars who may be able to shed some subjective light on the best choice. Base requirements are 4 seats, reasonable boot, not too fussed about fuel (or I could look at the diesel Ghibli)? I suspect the GT and QP could have much much larger servicing bills with the Ferrari sourced 4.7l to look after. Given the above what would you choose? Budget around £40K.

Cheers

My last car was a QP and I swapped it for a CLS Shooting brake.

The QP and GT are great cars but totally different to an A45. Size wise they are poles apart, if your doing a lot of town driving it could be an issue.

As for fuel I averaged around 17-18mpg with a mix of A roads and motorways, if you give it the beans your looking around 8-10mpg.

Don't expect to be able to throw a QP or GT about like you can an A45, they're cruisers unless you go for one of the quicker GT's and still then it's not going to be go-cart like.

Hi thanks for the reply. I realise they are very different. I've had the A45 2 years now and I now actually would like something different. A lot of miles are on the motorways between Brighton/Lincoln/Leicester and Yorkshire so size not too much of an issue. I would like to be able to get it into a multistory car park though!

8-10 MPG is a bit thirsty mind you.

Parking is a pain in a QP in a multi story, the wife used to get the hump driving around looking for an end row or having to go all the way to the top to find some space next you.

If we where going somewhere with a multi storey we would often take one of the other cars.

QP VI is a very big car and reckon you would have issues in a multistorey. A QP V is somewhat smaller and I loved mine when i had it. Would definitely recommend the 4.7 version, its a big lump for the 4.2 to get going.

The GT is completely different and much more fun than the QP, plus there is the noise from the 4.7 that is simply sensational. Servicing is not too bad for an exotic, about £1300 from a main dealer, every two years or 12,500 miles whichever comes first. Fuel consumption not that bad either, about 15mpg in town rising to 20mpg (or more if taking it easy) at brisk motorway speeds. If you really start to cane it then it does drop a fair bit but for most of the time it is not too bad for what it is. Space in the back is very good and the boot is even a good size, I have taken the 4 of us to France and Italy on holidays and have enough space (just!) for two weeks of luggage. Again, I would go for the 4.7 as it has so much more torque than the 4.2 which takes a while to get going and needs all of the revs to perform.

Good luck with your choice, they are fabulous cars to own, just make sure you get an inspection done and get one that has been used.

My dad has the 330hp ghibli. It's nice and the sound is beautiful, but it doesn't feel special enough. There is a ghibli s for sale within your budget which might be worth a look.

If you have a A45 Get an Maserati GranTurismo S (4.7) With MC shift - it'll be the most fun to drive. Although if you spend a lot of int in traffic the auto maybe more suited to you.
They sound incredible - cold start is rather lovely.

What kind of budget are you looking at the moment for this car?

I agree with maff. Plus you can pick them up for mid £40k. With the GT going out of production in Sept and the move to small twin turbo engines, it could be a sound buy as well at that price.
