Got the O/H's scooter up for sale and was wondering about test rides. It'd be pretty easy for someone to disappear down the road on it so wondered what procedure other people used.

Same with any vehicle. Deposit of full sale amount. Plus proof of insurance.

That makes sense. It's as good as new really, wondering whether to say if they bought it and did have a problem with how it or rode they could bring it back.

My experience has always been good with selling/buying bikes.

On buying my last 3 bikes I didn't test any of them, I could see they were in fine fettle so didn't expect to make the seller sweat buy asking to take it out for a test ride, also with my last purchase the weather was awful so wouldn't have taken it out anyway.

When selling my last bike, I did let 2 potential buyers out on the bike without giving me any cash, but I did have there car keys, wife, father as insurance. The 2nd buyer, tested and purchased the bike, electronic transfer was instant and off he went a happy man!

Buying my current bike I transferred the cash before I left to pick it up, just so I knew we didn't have to wait for the cash to transfer. I completely trusted the guy, knew where he lived, name etc. He was also an ex British touring car driver so he was even on google/wiki verifying identity , so knew that he wouldn't run off with my cash!
