Well, I must admit, if the sound was indeed a sonic boom, then it was impressive. Day or night, you'd definitely hear it. Sounded like fireworks going off, in vey close proximity. I listened to this playing out on 121.5 Mhz (the emergency channel), when you hear the words "On behalf of her majesties government I order you to turn right blah blah blah" ears tune in!
When asked why they (Air France) weren't in contact with ATC he bluffed some excuse out about not being contacted by ATC. Oops.

The tanker goes up in case it's a long job. The aircraft can refuel and keep tracking the threat. It's more likely to be of use for escorting Russian aircraft on the edge of our airspace. Last night it was used by 1 jet whilst the other returned to base. Once that was ready to intercept again the other would have landed.
