Sonic booms over Yorkshire a few moments ago.

Is something interesting going on? Not normally a mistake if it happens more than once.

Living in Yorkshire, there was definately a massive noise around 9.50pm. I did think it was fireworks from Leicester supporters, but having sprung into action and opened the front door to investigate, the noise repeated, and boom the whole place shook. If it was sonic boom, then I am mighty impressed. Massive amounts of energy...

It's circling above Whitby. Is it a refuelling tanker? Voyager?

Just had my young un get out of bed to ask what is going on after the first loud noise.

I went outside to have a look and BOOM the 2nd one went off. Very loud and made me jump. Never heard anything like it.

I've got nothing to compare it with but sounded bomb like to me but there was nothing visual to accompany it.

So is it confirmed it was a Sonic Boom? How far away can they be heard?

Noise wise, they can be heard a mile away for every one thousand feet of altitude, roughly.

25,000 feet = 25 miles etc etc.

Annoyingly I missed out on hearing it, probably because I was having a coughing fit.

Facebook is awash with comments though. Including one girl who was complaining that the RAF shouldn't authorise things like this at night as it woke her kid up.

Sigh

Almost - Quick Reaction Alert. They're on 24/7 standby to protect UK airspace, usually from civilian aircraft that have lost comms (as was the case last night).

Please let her know that if she is interested in sterilisation there are quite a few PHers who would happily contribute towards the costs if it will save us from her having further opportunities to have a child.
