I'm in the process of selecting a 125cc to replace my mondeo for commuting duties and general fun. Now i've selected a bike which i wont reveal in case of flaming etc as it'll get off topic but... the service schedule is something like;

186 miles
497 miles
745 miles

i assume the base figures are KM's

Now i'm told if i want to keep the 2 year warranty this has to be kept to and i cant perform any services myself. At £65 plus parts a time that is going to add up fast especially as i want to go out and 'explore' and just have fun as well as a 10 mile commute each way.

Will this increase to larger amounts of miles past a certain amount? or is this just a money making scheme i should avoid.

If i'm being completely naive please put me in my place, i will be buying the bike brand new.

eh? something got to be wrong there, I cant believe any new road going vehicle needs a service every few hundred miles? must be a mistake surely.

I would have thought it would need 12 monthly services in warranty or mileage based...like 3K or 5k miles or more

It's either a Chinese piece of st or a 2 stroke race bike tuned within an inch of it's life - and I don't know anyone selling the latter with a warranty. If it is the Chinese POS, I wouldn't worry about the service schedule, it's value will plummet and it will fall to bits anyway.

Get a Japanese 125, rock solid residuals and considerably better built.

The owners manual says 1000km 2500k then 6000km. then every 6 months

The bloke at the dealership must be the biggest con artist or i massively misheard him !

What bike is it? You're buying brand new so not like we can steal it from underneath you, plus 125s are only for learners anyway.

Sounds fair enough for a 125.

Your maths is crap given the miles conversion from your first post.

What warranty do you get with them? One year?

I'd get it serviced by the dealer for the first year then look after it yourself. They aren't complicated machines.

Then you might be better taking your £x000 and spending it in an equivalently priced used Japanese 125 which will give you 80% of it back when you sell it.

Your comprehension skills are crap.... if you had read with any amount of concentration i said that's what the dealership said... upon reading the manual i found the schedule that makes more sense. Trying to make someone look stupid over the internet whilst at the same time having no idea what you're talking about has always made me laugh, thanks

You don't need my help to look stupid.

You have done that yourself by buying a Lexmoto. Come back in three years time and let's see what state its in.....

Buy a used honda/yamaha etc instead.

So now you know what the real service schedule is, what exactly is your question?
You know how much it costs to buy, how much and how often it needs servicing, do the math.
How far is your commute? How far are you going under the "fun" heading? How often will you think it needs servicing?
The real question is whether you think the dealership is able to perform the work or whether the bike will reach it's 2 year anniversary. Maybe look carefully at the warranty, what's covered and what isn't.
They're cheap for a reason and rarely take heavy mileage well. Then consider what it'll be worth after 2 years and XXXX miles. Does it make financial sense overall??

I bought a secondhand chinese scooter for £300 and used it for commuting pretty much every day for 2 years. It never left me stranded and I just sold it on ebay for £600.

They are basic transport, reliable if looked after and don't have to cost a fortune in depreciation.

Got a PCX 125 now which is undeniably better made, but will likely cost me rather more.

Was tempted by a Lexmoto Arrow 125 when I started out with my CBT and was told to go second hand and Japanese... I listened, bought a 12yo (02 plate) Suzuki GS125 for £250 less than the Lexmoto and sold it 10 months later for £50 more than I paid. Cracking bike well built and the few spares I needed were always on the shelf.

Mate bought a 56 plate Jinlun 125 at the same time and it is hilariously badly put together. How it is still going is a wonder as trying to get spares is hit and miss.

It's worth keeping the warranty together though. Another mate's boyfriend has a Lexmoto and he had it back to the dealers at least once a week for things going pearshaped on it.

People really need to wake up to Chinese bikes, yep they are cheap, they sell in there thousands each year and they offer styles for all riders, I have recently bought my 1st scooter and it's a revelation and has really opened my eyes to the advantages of the twist and go market. Wish I'd have done it years ago, if I was a young learner just starting out the range of scooters and style of bikes available is amazing and I would struggle to choose, I am also old enough to remember when the 1st bikes came over from Japan they were rust buckets and not very reliable unless it was a c50 or c90 cub they were universally referred to as JAP CRAP.
Build quality as improved has as the reliability, I think the service scheduled are a bit close in mileage terms because the companies are improving the reliability and the service times will increase as times move on.
Those advocating buying a used Jap 125 need to do there research as honda 125 and Suzuki GS 125 are now mostly made in china, the jap 125 engine is largely used as a template for most Chinese 125.
Get yourselves down to a decent dealer and have a good at the quality around Thier builds, I was looking at a UM Vegas in my local dealers nice meaty looking sports cruiser type bike, it's a collaboration involving Harley Davidson, and Chinese and Indian manufacturers. Oh to be 17 again the choice is fantastic so is the after market parts to allow these youngsters to cut there teeth on modifying bikes, anything that brings youngsters into riding during these days has to be encouraged.
The British motorcycle industry sat on its laurels while the Jap crap was quitely drip fed into the market, then the honda CB 750/4 and Suzuki GT 750 arrived it was game over for the British motorcycle industry.
I currently own 4 bikes aVTX1800, st1100,cbr600f and my new lexmoto chieftain 125
And currently using the 125 because it's so easy to ride and manoeuvre, wish I'd have bought one years ago

I for one enjoyed it, I felt all nostalgic when the OP stated he drove a Mondeo. It conjured up images of my Dads mark 2, Will Hoy, Paul Radisich and Rickard Rydell. Then I googled to see if they still make them and they do!!! I'm surprised as I haven't seen one that isn't an ST 220 in, well, forever.
