So I want a fun naked bike again.

I can't stretch to a fully specced s1000r sport new, about a 10k budget.

I'm looking at a used/approved s1000r sport at about 9k with 2 year warranty, or an mt10.

Has anyone got any experience of an s1000r? Any niggles, anything to look out for? Whats general reliability like?

S1000R is an incredible bike. I found it hard to fault. Electronic suspension is a magic carpet ride, power is effortless, brakes are fansastic, sounds lovely, confidence at all all time high.

The only thing I would say is that you have to travel at silly speeds to feel like you are making to most of the bike and a couple of the switches may have looked a bit flimsy from memory.

Cant comment on the mt10 but if its anything like the new r1 it will be a very capable bike too.

Bought my s1000r in March. I've done just over 2000 miles.
Bad points:
Mirrors are useless over 5000 rpm
Tank range is small ( from memory it's about 140 miles to the fuel light)
Heated grips are not as good as my previous bike with Oxford heated grips.

Good points:
Cruise control - everyone laughs when I tell them I've got cruise on a bike, but if you think of it more as a speed limiter it's fantastic. 30mph limit, flick on cruise and look at the road ahead rather than constantly looking at your speed to see if you're creeping over.
Weight - feels nice and light
Motor is all you need on the road, spins up quickly, all the electronic nannies work well work well to keep the front wheel down if you leave them on.
Clear instruments - I like an analogue rev counter as opposed to the digital block types.
It's a far better bike than I am a rider.

Regards, doggydog.

I'm loving the above comment about small tank size! I so wish I could get 140 miles to the light the average from me is anywhere between 90-110 with running to 130 before having to fill up 😂 No different to all the blades etc I've owned in the past.
The s1000r is a fantastic bike brakes are awesome power is everything you could want even the standard exhaust sounds ok, I've owned mine from new (1 year) and 6000 miles I can't see me changing it anytime soon.
Having sat on a mt10 I find it a bit more touring based than sporty but this is only based on the seating and bar position.

I'm also loving the 140 tank range comment biggrin

With my main bike I get about 100 miles before the fuel light comes on and then without any warning I have about 10 miles or 10 minutes to get to a fuel station before I run out fuel. Yes I have run out of fuel a few times before and been scared stless on numerous other eek

MT10, just for that noise really. Lots of accessories available already and the aftermarket will be all over it soon. If it's a crossplane FZ1 it will do well.

Lol, I did say from memory! But I think you guys are right, it's probably more like 130-140 miles to empty.
I bought some bar risers for mine but ended up not fitting them as when I picked up the bike it wasn't any where near as cranked over as I remembered on the test ride (there's that bad memory thing again!).
Did I mention the mirrors are rubbish!!!

I bought mine a year ago now, £10k 1 year old with 3,800 miles on the clock.

Only issue I've had was cruise control switches stopped working. In general a very well put together bike, nice quality especially compared to Japanese bikes.

The power is very linear, rev limit isn't so high so you don't have to wring its neck for it to feel ballistic.

The front end does feel light when coming off a sports bike.

I've not ridden the BMW yet so can't compare, but I took the MT10 out on Saturday. It's a cracking bike

Aaah, but I don't see any of that when I'm riding it. And lets not forget I normally ride a TRX, not exactly in the 916 stakes for beauty!!

The looks are actually growing on me

Well, took out a 6 mile old mt10....

It was quick, felt nice. However I'm reserving full judgement till later in the week when I've had it out again when tyres and brakes can be used with more anger.

Also took a street triple r out. which was awesome. Not quite as quick but you could pin it everywhere, looked to be better made, brakes and suspension felt nicer.

I would echo all of the S1000R comments made so far. Couldn't be happier with mine. Its so good you just forget about the few very tiny niggles like the mirrors. I've put extenders on mine so at least you can see behind before the vibration blurs everything. So easy to ride, laser guided through corners, gives so much confidence.

The S1000R is not exactly a looker to a lot of eyes but I seriously just couldn't put up with MT-10's looks. Only my opinion of course. It is going to be Marmite. The price is a big attraction as they have pitched it in keenly by the looks of it, if it rides great and the looks do appeal then its a good deal.

Had a new Street Triple R not so long back. Obviously not directly comparable to the bigger bikes. The S1000R is on another planet everywhere for me.

So went for a ride on a mt10 today, it was only 6 miles old.

Its ruddy quick, proper grunty feeling. I had to be careful as the brakes and tyres had never been used under the bikes power.

Plus points....

Its quick

Made a great noise

Fueled really nice

Rider modes did alter how the bike felt

handled well

Amazing wind protection even upto 140mph closed road speeds

Suspension felt nice

Negative points....

I didn't like some of the casting marks/finish in areas, wheels

Didn't like the view from the bars to the yoke, its crying out for some better finished bits.

Didn't like front mudguard, felt too flimsy.

I'm going back later in the week to ride it again to make sure.

Before I left, I was offered a new speed triple R to try.

Plus points....

Brakes are awesome, more feel than the mt10

Suspension felt plusher/more controlled/'nicer'

General finish was better than the mt10

I loikes the machined parts

Its great to just look at

Gearbox felt as nice as the yams

It was knee down in 5 miles fun.

I could thrash it across roads on the common, so useable power and gearing?

Negative points

New price.... however I reckon it'd only be 1k more than the mt10....

needs another 10bhp, would a decat and map fix that?

So, I'm going back again to have a blast on the mt10 with a few more miles under its belt.....

Maybe a little left field. I tested the R fantastic bike, comfy, smooth , powerful brakes and all the electronics on it and subsequently put my deposit down and very happy. Unfortunately I took a Aprilia Tuono V4 out...... I cancelled the BMW and bought the Aprilla. I think I've had the bike about 2 years now and no regrets. If your after a fun (not hunched over sports bike) bike for a blast out on a weekend i cant think of anything thats more fun. The engine noise alone is crazy, strong brakes, feels like it will rip you head off more than the BMW ( only my personal view), plenty of safety electronics but no CC. and been super reliable.

The down sides are smaller dealer network, 100 miles to a refill, cheaper second hand. I've read on the forum that the Aprilia seat is not comfortable, but fine for me and you get off every 10 miles for a refill smile

you can't go wrong with either bike ( BWW or Aprilia, I've never ridden the other bike) both are amazing.

Just to say I went from a speed triple not the r but the latest one and the s1000r is so much more of a bike! If you think the brakes are good on the speed the Bmw s will blow you away!

Nice to meet you today,I didn't realise you were on here!!!
I was chatting to you before you rode the MT, did you find it comfy enough to do a decent trip round Europe on one?
The speed triple, If you get arrow full system low boy adds some more horses and arrow give the dealers the map to do the fuelling when it's fitted. It sounds awesome as well
