Got to take the MT10, Speed triple r, 1290 SDR, and also the new tiger sport out today
The MT has a brilliant engine , absolutely ballistic it has power everywhere from no revs
I did find the suspension very hard, fine on smooth roads but not good on broken surfaces, although it was just a short test and on stty roads
The sdr was lovely the engine is a proper weapon but it's too expensive compared to the yam
The speed triple is lovely! Very well put together, some lovely finishes on it, again I think the suspension is too hard on the r version for the road.
The big surprise WA the tiger sport
As quick as the speed ( for me anyway) the suspension was very planted and you could really hustle it, pop it in sport mode and it's a weapon , OK it doesn't have the power of the MT and ktm but on sttier roads it's quicker in my hands
Loved them all
Oh, decisions!!!
So maybe you need to try the Speed Triple S then? Having ridden the Street Triple R I concur the Ohlins on that is overkill for the public road unless its that rare billard table smooth. The MT has a brilliant engine , absolutely ballistic it has power everywhere from no revs

I have the older model Speed Triple non R and the suspension on that is great if still a little too harsh on poorly surfaced roads
I wanted Yamaha to do a supernaked 1000 ever since the MT-9 was announced, test rode a MT-10 and S1000R on Saturday.
Have just put a deposit down on a new S1000R Sport, trading/selling my 'owned from new' 2006 Super Duke.
The price difference is around £1500 after you include Yamaha's OTR charges, even less as I have the 1st service thrown in.
I really wanted to like the Yamaha having grown up with 350LC/YPVS FZR Genesis & EXUPs, I like what Yamaha do but having ridden it for an hour, I didn't feel it was a replacement for my 990 SD, yes it did go once past 6000rpm (and it did) but it just wasn't punchy below this ala Super Duke.
It feels how it looks too, very high and up in your way up front, did feel high & top heavy. Again the SD is tall compared to a sports bike but it feels more slight.
I tried the S1000R purely because I was passing. It immediately felt how I expected a super naked to feel, direct connection between bars & top yoke, power from very low revs and consistent to the 'running in' red line.
The active suspension was noticable in not being noticable - if I can try to explain: sitting on the bike it felt quite soft & comfy in a VFR800 sort of way, it just didn't feel like this when pushing on, you don't think about it at the time but remembered how soft it initially felt but didn't cause issues during a spirited ride.
Anyway, that's my take, will sell the Hayabusa too & go back to 1 road bike, hopefully with the extras available for the BMW I should be able to chop and change it for those long distance trips.

Maybe a little left field. I tested the R fantastic bike, comfy, smooth , powerful brakes and all the electronics on it and subsequently put my deposit down and very happy. Unfortunately I took a Aprilia Tuono V4 out...... I cancelled the BMW and bought the Aprilla. I think I've had the bike about 2 years now and no regrets. If your after a fun (not hunched over sports bike) bike for a blast out on a weekend i cant think of anything thats more fun. The engine noise alone is crazy, strong brakes, feels like it will rip you head off more than the BMW ( only my personal view), plenty of safety electronics but no CC. and been super reliable.
The down sides are smaller dealer network, 100 miles to a refill, cheaper second hand. I've read on the forum that the Aprilia seat is not comfortable, but fine for me and you get off every 10 miles for a refill
you can't go wrong with either bike ( BWW or Aprilia, I've never ridden the other bike) both are amazing.
Im of the same thinking. A good friend had the S1000R for 18 months, great bike and it did everything well but it didnt really excite himThe down sides are smaller dealer network, 100 miles to a refill, cheaper second hand. Another runs a Trumpet Speed Triple R, its a bit down on power compared to the Beemer or Aprilia but great fun
My next upright with be the Aprilia Factory, currently running an MV Agusta Dragster RR. Cracking bike but you think Aprilia are hard for parts...
Going back to the OP if it was my money Id have the MT10 but Id have to get a aftermarket kit for that front end
After posting the above, put my money where my mouth is.
Did 350 miles on it yesterday, in all weathers, really struggling to see how it's bland in any way - having come from a Superduke & a Hayabusa, it has the handing & character of the KTM and the shove of the Hayabusa - can't wait to get it run it.
Even used the heated grips to dry out my unlined gloves!

I agree with you FWIW, but I appear to be in the minority.Did 350 miles on it yesterday, in all weathers, really struggling to see how it's bland in any way - having come from a Superduke & a Hayabusa, it has the handing & character of the KTM and the shove of the Hayabusa - can't wait to get it run it.

I liked the quickshifter, and the std exhaust was quite fruity. I could of quite happily lived without the fancy suspenders though. It was OK, but I felt it just lacked something.BMW servicing and spares prices scare me too. And the exhaust and cat on the demo looked like it was about 20years old. Probably Ok if you like cleaning, but I'm not that keen
Have ordered a black Mt10 a few weeks ago, Waiting for it to come in, got the Akro can and link pipe ordered as well.
I loved the superduke 1290 but, wanted something where I could at least tour on, there's not much stuff available for the superduke for luggage etc and I didn't want to pay £16 plus for the GT model, I found the superduke to be very similar in performance to the MT but for a good £3k more, I can do a lot to the MT for that money!, the s1000r is a great bike but the MT fits me better and imo the cross plane engine is far better suited to the road.

I put my money where my forum posts are. Got this yesterday. Recently tried the Superduke 1290 and the Speed Triple. I still think this is a better bike (for me) than both of those. (And I didn't try an MT10 because the dealer said it would be october until one was available and i'm going on a tour in Sept)

Got mine a few weeks ago, you may be dissapointed by the fuel consumption/range. 17 litre tank @ 34mpg = frequent stops.I loved the superduke 1290 but, wanted something where I could at least tour on, there's not much stuff available for the superduke for luggage etc and I didn't want to pay £16 plus for the GT model, I found the superduke to be very similar in performance to the MT but for a good £3k more, I can do a lot to the MT for that money!, the s1000r is a great bike but the MT fits me better and imo the cross plane engine is far better suited to the road.

I'm totally biased, but can't help thinking everything except the Triumph and the MV is utterly gopping! The MT10 looks like a Transformer.
Agreed (also bias). I find the Triples and the S1000R to be very 'Plain Jane' in the looks department; no doubt very capable bikes, but just a little uninspiring to look at. I actually like the MT10 though, it's a bit different and appeals to my geeky love of sci-fi. I could see Batman riding one (although Bruce Wayne rides an MV).

Ok, biased as I own one but I have had circa 30 motorbikes in my lifetime, but I too (really) struggle with the 'bland' comments and have never heard this from anyone I have given a shot to.
My comment is purely based on looks; I've never ridden a S1000R and I'm 100% sure it is a great bit of kit (judging by owner comments and reviews), but it isn't really a 'standout looker', if you know what I mean?I suppose the car equivalent is a Porsche 911; great car, loved by owners and experts, does everything well, but in a sea of sports cars it kind of just blends in.
