i'd agree for the run of the mill biposto etc, ive covered my costs so far on my own but they arent going up massively like the bigger bikes. definitely go for an R, SP or SPS as at least the value holding up offsets your running costs a little, and generally the owners have tended to respect the fact they need a commitment to regular expensive servicing just like the 996/998i often pass the Bike Specialists in Sheffield and he has some crazy priced ltd edition ducatis in there! i had the chance some time ago of an R for very good money and regret not buying it at the time, values have marched on a bit since.

I thinking was more in expectation of getting a swooning response, as someone buying a Ferrari 360 might. I think the responses took him by surprise, hence his ongoing battle to convince us that it's a good deal. 
im actually interested in getting input from people that own or have owned one of these so i can make my own mind up whether or not i should buy it
whether it does or does not make or lose money i care less about. in fact i assume to lose money but that doesnt matter because im not buying a depreciating asset with a view to making money (funny that)
my issue is that ive seen prices of these things vary massively and good ones seem to go for much more than the 2-3 mentioned earlier...

Bog standard 748 won't have gone for much more. If you want it, then buy it, but it will cost you more money than you thought, it won't rocket in value and it's not a great bike, as well as being very old tech nowadays.
Just for info OP my last 2 year belt service and clearance check at Cornerspeed Ducati weighed in at 600 quid as one of the rockers was starting to show signs of losing chrome. Mine has fsh and 14k miles and is always warmed up properly and allowed to build oil flow to the rockers. Get a bad one and need many rockers plus other parts and you are potentially into 1200 quid or more in parts if it wiped out a cam through not being replaced immediately.
Go into it with eyes open. For their size, fabulous looks, noise and drama I love it but it has costs built in. I wouldn't personally have bought a std biposto etc because the costs are the same against a depreciating asset.
