why you shouldn't wear a 'polite' vest *actual data shocker*

"In 2013, Walker led a study that saw a co-researcher sent on to the roads on a bike in seven different outfits, with a gauge measuring the space drivers gave him overtaking. Four outfits made him look like a cyclist of varying experience, while three had bright yellow waistcoats with written messages. One read: “Novice cyclist: please pass slowly.” Another: “Polite: please slow down.” And finally: “Police: camera cyclist.”
The data for 5,700 overtakes showed just one garb made an appreciable difference to driver behaviour: the one saying “police”. Here, the average passing distance was notably bigger, while the proportion of vehicles who passed very near the bike was significantly lower. In contrast, the tabard saying “polite” saw almost twice as many potentially dangerous passes."
So there you have it.

Went for a ride on Sunday evening and stopped by the side of the road in a lay-bye for a few minutes for a break and to watch all the nice cars coming back from Goodwood. I was in a newly introduced 30mph limit that's usually ignored, but this evening I noticed all the traffic was doing 30mph, which seemed odd.

You shouldn't wear one because you look like a . I could have saved all that research.
^^ this borderline impersonating an officer with a heavy measure of 'holier than thou', ugh.
However change the font and lose the battenburg and people can wear what they want.

It doesn't stop the wearers looking like a tt though!
That said, if that's what they want to wear then so what? And, they're no worse than ...
Sons of Anarchy wanabe Harley riders in chaps and tassels;
MotoGP wanabe sports bike riders in race leathers and knee sliders;
The Ewan and Charlie wanabe Adventure bike riders in desert clothing, full aluminium luggage for their packed lunch and enough auxiliary lights to be seen from space;

The police have said it's not illegal. I would be fairly certain a substantial amount of their officers think the wearers are s though. I'm waiting for that press release.It doesn't stop the wearers looking like a tt though!

It's not comparable to your examples, the reason is because they are actually trying to deceive you in order to alter your behavior. That is what irks people. Being a fking wannabe is something else entirely, it's their crime and also their punishment.

the research in this thread shows that POLITE had no effect. it is POLICE that has an impact.

You (of "where’s your evidence" fame!!! ) are assuming they are trying to deceive. I doubt that as, if that were the case, they’d all be riding large white faired bikes, wearing black leathers and white helmets. Most POLITE vest wearers I’ve see are definitely not dressed like that and most are on stty little scooters.I think that most are just riders who lack confidence (and for many, riders whose Mum lacks confidence in their ability on a bike!) and have bought something they think is "armour" against the big bad traffic out there.

I'm flattered by the moniker! I think that most are just riders who lack confidence (and for many, riders whose Mum lacks confidence in their ability on a bike!) and have bought something they think is "armour" against the big bad traffic out there.
Nah, specious reasoning again says I. You're arguing because they do not take something to great lengths that they do not want to take advantage to a lesser extent which makes no sense. Besides, poor efforts at impersonation have the obvious advantage of more plausible deniability should they end up arguing about it. Which they will. Repeatedly.
You might be right that they lack confidence and should be pitied rather than lambasted, but it's not an assumption to say they set to deceive people. If they had not set out to half-heartedly mimic police, then how would they believe the battenburg and text would help over a normal hi-vis vest? Why pay more for the printing and specially order it?
I also think far from being a sign of desperation, it's a sign of willingness to engage in aggression. Any sensible person knows this sort of thing pisses people off, we now apparently even have objective data to demonstrate this. So they obviously are happy to piss people off, and presumabley are happy to forfeit the consideration of their fellow road users despite their obvious vulnerability.
Not a good idea given the number of psychopaths on the roads.
However you feel about what someone is wearing, how can you use that as justification for risking their life? Some huge amounts of stupid in this thread. How would any of you feel if you decided the vest wearer was a , passed too close to 'teach them a lesson' they wobbled and fell under the truck behind you who was following too close cos he thought you were a ? Grow up and stop being silly.

no it doesn't - read the pdf - http://opus.bath.ac.uk/37890/1/Walker_2013.pdfthe research in this thread shows that POLITE had no effect. it is POLICE that has an impact.
lowest mean for overtaking proximity is when wearing a 'polite' vest - 'police' has understandably the highest mean for overtaking proximity
