Bob, having followed my mate on his (I was on his Z1)I would say this is the norm
Cheers Fleegle. I hope that's the case, I haven't had a chance to talk to any other owners yet. It was an impressive smoke screen. I need to change my two stroke oil too as I'm using some Castrol stuff that doesn't smell very nice.

The 380 uses Silkolene Semi Synthetic and it smells glorious!

I use Motul Synthetic, and witht he oil pump set up as per the manual, it barely smokes, except when cold, and seems to burn much cleaner than the 2 stroke oils of old i.e. Castrol TT.

Seems to create much less carbon build up too !

The Silkolene is pretty smoke free too. How does the Motul smell? The new fangled Castrol stuff just smells foul.

Whatever goes in it has to make the garage smell nice!

I'll find out what my mate uses but I'm sure its a Castrol product.

He likes it smokey as it annoys all the cyclists on their Sunday 'races' around Box Hill

He uses Rock Oil

He says it smokes a lot on start up then settles after 5 mins. He says it smokes a bit if he's been on a slow run and then gets the opportunity to open up

Having ridden it myself, it doesn't like going slow. It becomes very vibey and a bit snatchy, but once you start revving through the gears it becomes a pleasure to ride

I'm using Castrol Power 1 fully synthetic, seems to burn pretty clean. Is more smokey on start up but might have something to do with forged Pistons.

Mine seems to be very vibey at idle but then that is the same as the 380, once the revs are up it's fine.

Thanks for letting me know which oil he uses. It needs to be good and smell nice!

Thought I'd do a bit of an update. A couple of weeks ago, the weather was lovely so I got the 750 out for another good run down the coast.

The old girl is loads of fun to ride and it's real shame the weather has now turned. It's bloody cold today.

Anyway, a few pictures...

I've put the old girl away for winter now. This weekend I've got to drain the tank and the carbs. Then I can get a new fuel tap ordered as the one I have leaks. I'm going to order and fit some new bolts and washers as there are few that look a bit manky, get the badges sorted, re-trim the seat and just generally fettle it for next year.

No more work has been done on the 380, though I'll order all the bits I need for that when I order the bits for the 750.

I should really start on the 500 this winter too.

Some cracking two strokes on this post. Just reintroduced myself to these epic machines after 40 years I learnt to ride on one so had to buy this Suzuki TS 250 Savage. The sun was shining, blue skies so had to give it a little blast down to the beach.

You did the right thing, they aint worth 16k , as much as I love my 500, the 350 for a quarter of the price is a far better buy and a more "fun" bike.

Hello Podman

Yes enjoying the blast from the past. I forgot how much fun these machines are to ride, just can't get enough of it. Been out already this morning, such easy riding.

Cheers

Loving that GT380, I had a GT380M, it was my first new vehicle way back in 1976, ran her for around 5 years and put over 120k miles on her. The bike was a "grey import" though at the time I didn't know what one of those was. The 380 was my second choice, my first being a Triumph Tiger 750 but it got sold just before I could afford it so settled for the 380.

Turned out to be a great little bike, not the fastest thing around but could hold her own against my mate's RD350. Fuel economy, I could get over 50mpg or as low as 16mpg if driven hard, was late picking up the girl friend after I finished work and used all the performance the bike had, I had exactly 1 gallon of petrol in her and I coasted the last half mile to the girlfriend's house, remember 50p petrol pumps? biggrin

The one big trouble I had with the bike was the coils getting wet and the plugs shorting out, I eventually encased them, the coils, in silicon and that seemed to cure the problem. The rain in the far north of Scotland could be quite severe, and I ran the bike all year come hail, rain, or snow.
