My thinking is that it was over tightened and that's why it's gone ping? Or maybe it's just crap but I was under the impression WP made pretty good st.
I'd be surprised. To get that piece to snap you'd have to wind the tangs in far more than the linkage arm would allow when it' located in the U. There's barely half a mil play either side play.
It could be a fatigue failure from a poked bearing allowing excessive play so double check the linkage and bearings, especially if they're caked in grunge.
Alternatively, it's the wrong piece for the bike and is too wide so being over clamped when bolted up.
Either way, don't get it welded, it needs replacing

Doesn't matter what documentation you have really, that part of the shock shouldn't fail in that way, look at the size of it, that is possibly fatigue set in from the original weld of the adjuster rod, and could prove dangerous. I'd be inclined to send it to WP for them to see properly, and hopefully offer to manufacture a new part for it, and service it, which could end up a cheap option when if they decide it's rather embarrassing.

Don't refit it.

Let them throw it away if they won't help you keep one of their parts in use rather than someone else's, and then put the pictures up on more media, of the type of failure so as many people with them can check their own bikes, and remove said part before injury occurs perhaps.

I still have this knackered shock and no longer have a bike for it to go on, and as I'm now leaving the country I probably can't take it with me. So before I put it up on eBay for 99p does anyone on here want it for the price of postage?

I came to the conclusion that it wasn't meant to be on a Hornet as I've found no other WP shocks for sale for that model and no literature from WP saying they ever made one for it, but I may be wrong. It could be worth a fair bit if repaired I imagine but I don't have the time or interest to pursue it really.

So, any takers? laugh

Go on then, I love a bit of st hehe

In seriousness I can probably get something made up for it as I work in engineering and I always have projects on the go so I'm sure I'll find something it fits

This may be against selling rules on PH, but I'm gonna link to the top box I'm trying to shift too. (I may also be selling a mounting plate for it and some other bits and bobs...).

Happy to knock some off as a PH discount, or if things are bought in a bundle - saves me posting them to each corner of the country.

Top box comes with white dirt-effect PH smiley - these can't be bought!

Replaced the shock on my thunderace years ago. Was struggling to see how i could suspend it for a few days without an abba stand, etc.

Then looked up and realised it was parked under a tree.

Ratchet strap hooked under the rear subframe, looped over a branch. Job done....that was until it started swinging. Ended up bracing it with wood to keep it steady.

If this is about the grips then I hope you checked the imgur link before you posted? Here it is for you:

Fake feedback, item new, seller changed mind & lied - proof - www.imgur.com/a/WTVBh

You can't contest negative feedback after a certain amount of time unfortunately, so there's nothing I could do as I don't use eBay regularly and couldn't respond to it officially, hence the picture.

Consider yourself removed from the PH discount offer CoolHands! laugh

OP the fact the mounting bracket failed is quite worrying. Do WP have any comment on that at all?
Rather than mounting brakets I had two showa OE Blackbird rear shocks themselves fail on a 2006 end line model in the time I owned the bike (7.5 years). I just sourced 2 OE replacements off internet/ebay.
The first failure of the factory shock it completely p*ssed its oil contents out everwhere after failure and the actual shock separated into two unjoined pieces! The second failed 6months after fitted and just lost its oil slowly over time not quite as dramatically but ultimately failed.
It was very bouncy and undamped on both occasions.
Anyway fitted a second replacement off ebay which did last and I've now traded the bike.
I am wondering if the 6mm rear shock shim might have been the cause, basically it raised the overall ride heigh of the rear around 25mm to really improve handling at the cost of a little stability at proper autobahn levels of high speed.
Sorry to butt in but I had an ohlins shock fail in exactly the same way with no clear reason why .... The replacement eye cost me about 20 quid, obviously I have seen that wp say that part isn't available which is a bit crap on their behalf. I bet an ohlins or similar eye would fit that shock

Maybe not so clear cut as you may think..My friend had the same issue with an aftermarket shock (cant remember which brand) on his Blade, turns out there was a spacer between shock and linkage that should have fitted on re-assembly but wasnt, a couple of Summers later, it also snapped.

Especially as the op isn't even sure that this shock is even the correct fitment for their bike. As you say if the packing washers / shims between the shock eye aren't correct the shock eye may have been incorrectly loaded / stressed. My shock eye snapped in a similar way to the op BUT it was a second hand shock, so I have no idea how it had been previously fitted before I got my mits on it although it was definitely the correct shock for the machine
