Hi people,
This just arrived. I wasn't searching for one but the price was low.
It's so different to anything I've worked on before it's like learning a new language. Kidney bowls etc..
I've been advised it might be a perfect donor for a backdate but given I don't know the first thing, it might be best just to keep it stock. I'm expecting to find much rust but this doesn't worry me as I can weld and have more patience than is sensible. The engine oil seals leak and cause smoke in the cabin plus the cold start jet isnt working but starts ok when warm. I'll put progress photos on when stuff happens. Just been looking at it for a week, trying to get my head round it.

It's a dog. I haven't taken on something this far gone in a long time.
Took it for an mot today, most of the fails were corrosion related.
Kidney bowls rusted, front wheel arches, inner wings etc.
Driving it was a bit of a surprise, cabin filled with oil smoke, needed a respirator!
Not much synchro in 1st, non in second. Enough power to keep up with traffic but nothing else.
So an engine and box rebuild as well as body repairs. Happy dayssmile

Is it supposed to have this whale tail? I'd prefer a flat bootlid.

It has a 3.2 Carrera rear spoiler and front lip. No reason why you can't go with a flat lid but I'd remove the front lip too. It sounds like a 20 grand rebuild, maybe even more if the engine needs work. They seem to be fetching over £30k now if restored properly and with decent provenance.

A backdate won't save you any money and might actually result in a car that's worth less!

Personally looking how bad it is I would not bother. Whilst I appreciate you can do most jobs yourself. The parts are horrendously expensive. What is the interior like. I am guessing shagged as well. You will do at least £30K sorting it out. The numbers do not match up

Indeed. Financially, the money is in selling the parts.

But then again, is it all about money? Saving this car and restoring it to all of its glory has to be satsifying doesnt it?

I say go for it!

You'll need £30k if farming the work out and getting it done properly.

My vote would be to return it to its lovely original SC glory!

You'll have a hell of a car and if you got it for the right price you shouldn't lose your shirt either.
solid advice. IMO

Seconded. Keep the original look - maybe a few subtle engine upgrades though whilst you're rebuilding it smile

Keep it as an SC.

You're going to have to strip it to a shell so there is always the option of going for an interesting period colour if you want something a little different. Plus you could always add lightness!

Look at the images half way down this thread re: Rust on older Impact Bumpers 911's

If you can weld and rebuild an engine then crack on!

If you can't weld, then you will be able to after doing this!

Many thanks for all the encouragement/ derisionsmile
Black leather interior isn't too bad but will need a refresh.
I've decided to stick with it and make a start on the rust as soon as I can get some panels.
Anyone recomend a good supplier in the midlands?

Jesus wept that's bad. Mine is in near prefect condition but luckily I didn't spend the 20k needed to fix and it was better to start. If you have the skills and the money then go for it.

Ps no whale all the way

No derision Alan. I sincerely wish you all the best. Just want you to go into this with your eyes wide open. Whilst a rust bucket SC can be cheap to buy they are not cheap to repair. What is a really nice SC worth nowadays. Weigh it all up before you commit. A fresh engine without labour will see you at £10K. I've seen too many people think they can do this on a budget and end up with an unfinished project worth not a lot and skint. www.impactbumpers.com will give you a wealth of information and they are a really great bunch of people.

Thanks again for the reality check, exactly the reason I'm on here.
I did sign up with ib when I got the car and spent a while looking at the sc section but decided to discuss it on here first as I like the vibe on ph and not sure if other forums will be shouty and/or cliquey. Also signed up to pelican parts for another view on it.
As for the car I'm taking a long thorough look at where the money will need to be spent and what order to do things.
My main concern is that once the process begins if I'm not careful it will become a basket case, if it stalls at this stage it won't be a happy project. This is supposed to be a jolly so if it gets stressful I'll be best looking at other projects.
My thoughts are maybe do one section at a time without disturbing any other parts and make slow progress without trashing the whole thing? I don't mind the idea of this taking 3-4 years, there's enough to do.

IB's not a cliquey place , we all have, and or have had terrible rot , smokey engines and notchy gearboxes amongst other things .... smile
Quiet over there at the mo as its holiday time..
Good luck with it , enjoy doing whatever you want with it be it a resto a hotrod or whatever you fancy..
