Help me fix my 250 please :)
Discussion
Weird gear selection problem sounds like the selector pawl spring could have failed.Should only need the side casing to be removed in order to gain access for investigation and replacement.
The non "turn over" problem could be related to the above (as has been mentioned by other posters )
As the selector drum obviously is no longer connected to the lever so neutral is not obtainable.
(Depends whether or not machine has to be in neutral to be started.) What does the manual say?
HTH.

Given that the 250 should start in gear with the clutch pulled in this leads me to believe:
1) Problem with the clutch system even though it seems to be working fine after a visual check
2) Two sepearate problems - one gearbox related and one electrical/starter related.
Will investigate over the weekend and post back if I manage to find what's to blame.
Thanks for the help all.

Sounds to me like the gearshift clamp is loose and when you hit the end stop the linkage is slipping round the shaft. Easily proven: the bike will be stuck in gear so won't roll unless you pull the clutch in, no neutral light, won't start.
This.It just sounds like the gear shift is loose/worn. This happened on my old X7. Was the gear change sloppy before this happened?
It might just be a simple case of tightening a bolt or it may be worn out.
Do the electrics work at all? Lights etc? If they do then it's almost certainly the above IMO.

Yes it did. THe gear change felt really light/easy for a few days before. It just sounds like the gear shift is loose/worn. This happened on my old X7. Was the gear change sloppy before this happened?

But what I don't understand is if the gearchange is at fault, why doesn't the bike start when the clutch is pulled in?
According to the ninja250 wiki link someone posted earlier, the bike should start in gear while the clutch is in.
The fact the neutral light is not coming on suggests that the lever is not putting the bike in neutral.
If the lever is tight and clamped on the spline into the gearbox, then it's not that.
Having the sidestand down kills the engine so check it is up.
Failing that, is there a sensor on the sidestand itself which has failed that then fails to tell the bike it is in neutral? My MSX had a duff one and it wouldn't start.

Agreed. OP is it actually changing gear when you move the gearlever, or does it just move up/down with no real resistance?.blue said:

That I can't help with unfortunately. I'd see if you can get it into neutral (assuming that you can tighten up the screw/get a new part for the gear change). Once you can do that then you've got more chance of fault finding.Do you have a manual for it? If not try: http://mototh.com/files/kawasaki/Ninja_250R/Kawasa...
Don't know if that's the right model or not but it might be useful.
