450SX biggrin

In at the deep end then biggrin

I predict youd be faster and be able to ride for longer on a 250 2T but too late now eh. At least youll get fitter faster. Or die. One of the other biggrin

Ive had:

YZ465
CR500
CR500
KTM 500 EXCF
KTM 250 EXCF
KTM 250 EXC
KTM 300 EXC

And more.

You can always tell the off road newbies, they rock up on the biggest baddest bike money can buy because 'I ride litre road bikes, 500, pah, Ill own it' rofl And yes, my first born again off roader was a KTM 500 wink Soon sold it for a more manageable machine.

Haha glad you had fun! Where was that your riding? You did well to find a dry track it looks perfect there. You should be standing at that point though. Sit just as you turn in to a corner and stand back up just as your straightening out and stay standing all the time. Much easier said than done though I'm the worst for sitting lol

Woodchip is normally pretty good. If it's deep you have to treat it like sand which is mainly to keep the power on pretty much all the time to keep the front light otherwise it'll sink and your off haha. Most tracks that stay open in the winter are sand or woodchip tbf
I went to a track in Slough which is about 20 minutes from me http://www.smxp.co.uk/ They try to stay open all year, seem like a good bunch down there.

As for the tips, I was being told the errors of my ways! Need to set the suspension up but can't remember if this was from the first session or I was getting tired. Weather was great however. I have a lot of learning to do regarding technique though smile

CR250 looks fantastic too!

Probably would be faster but oh well, go big or go home right? biggrin Currently training for a half iron man, so the plan is to get very fit. How were the CR500's? I would absolutely love to try a supermoto'd version, definitely on my bucket list.

Cheers for the comments on the CR! Really gutted to have to sell it but noemi have the kxf I won't ride it much and I can't justify having 2 toys lol

My main advice for improving is to ride as much as you can. Every time I have a week or 2 off I feel like I'm starting again when I get back on the bike. Once a week is good. The really good riders are often riding 2 or 3 times a week. I try to get out ever 4 out of 5 weekends roughly

It was some time ago when I ran the CR500s (20 years ago). At the time they felt ballistic, the torque being ridiculously impressive.

I was out of biking for 9 years after the CRs then got back into it on a Honda CRF450R, the closest I could find to the CR500. The bottom end felt similar but where as the CR500s would keep pulling the 450 felt like a diesel and I kept hitting the limiter to begin with.

Would love another 500 2 strokecloud9

Well done for going straight for the big bike. These engines are very tractable and it won't kill you if you go easy. (unlike say an old CR500 which was an on/off monster).

Welcome to the club

I dont recall mine being on/off 2ith delivery. I had an 89 and a 90. The 89 had massive power everywhere, from tick over up. The 90 was completely different with a much gentler power delivery. Neither had a normal 2 stroke power band in that they didn't take off after a certain rpm, they just pulled from tick over.

That's my recollection, maybe time has distorted reality.

Was going to attempt this Sunday just gone but didn't get a chance. Will update when I get out on it. Next track will Arncot just north of Oxford, looks to be a decent track.

I'm a newbie to motocross - Went to Spain in 2014 used an old CRF 250 (Not mine) came back bought a 2004 CRF 250 R for £900 - Went to the first track and was the slowest out there but had a massive grin on my face, I got pi**ed off with kicking it over and it was a bh to start so went and sorted out a deal on a CRF250X Enduro - All I do now is throw a bag on my back and sod off to the local motocross track, when I get peckish I then ride off to the local cafe then ride back and crack on with my session - So far I've done Salisbury Plain and the South of France on it - Love it.......Having an electric start is bliss - Was told to avoid the 450 as more power than I can handle and can understand that now.......

Great days out regardless of weather, good training and definitely improves you as a rider IMO and another bike social gathering which is always a bonus......

Tried rotating photos but no idea of how to do it!.......

Similar to me, although I've been riding for years ,Mx is too brutal for me as I've got bad knees, back etc etc although I love to go on track now and then, do lots of enduros now which are brilliant

Slightly off topic, anyone used a ktm exc 250 2t on road? I have been offered one to swap for a car I am selling. It's a 2005 so don't think it has electric start. I would like to ride off road but based in Aberdeen it's hard without a van /trailer.

Had an sx and exc on the road, fine for a few miles but wouldn't fancy going more than 10/20miles on one

My friends KTM 250 (the 2013) is putting out 42bhp according to the books. It helps that it's FI, Most are probably around the 38-40 mark and weigh about 115-130kg roughly.
Man MX bikes have fairly put on the weight over the years! My IT465 was about 92kg, and 28 years ago when I was a lot fitter than I am now, could carry the pesky machine.

It was a lovely bike to ride, very tractable and would pull from tick over in 5th. The advantage of having a road legal bike was being able to take it out on forestry roads. On those tracks you could see the small scuff and thrown out sand from when the wheel spun up slightly during the power pulse when engine fired, about 1 every 10meters or so.

If, as an inexperienced rider, you found a 2-stroke 250 to be gutless, I would suggest you might want something like a Maico 700.

biggrin
It was a 4 stroke job (may have got the model number incorrect). Haha, I think a CR500 from what I've heard is more than enough. Still a life goal to ride a sumo versioned one.
I had the CR 250 Honda
Let me assure you, theses are vicious, wickedly quick.
But seeing the other lads on bigger stuff, I also wanted the bigger stuff, so bought me a RM500 (Suzuki 2 stroke air cooled)
Leave nothing to the imagination, === these are pure evil === pure killing machines

I had the RM500 for about 6 months,
Had to sell it in the end, as I started to really be scared of it, and lost bottle
I ended up on a XT350 (Yam 4 stroke)
Just so predictable, loved that bike

Congrats on your new bike, the sxf450 is superb! I started out on a KX80 big wheel as a tiny tot, graduated to RM250 2Ts which were immense fun and easy to jump; then on to 4Ts - I have an RMZ250 which is light and thrashable although I was thinking of replacing it with an SXF 350!

I have also just bought a KTM 350 6 day for enduro - have to say, ktm make some superb bikes these days.

Where are you riding next?

I do love the 2 smokes, I've had supermotos in KX/CR and a four stroke 640 ccm, the CCM was ultimately the most powerful at around 65rwhp after a lot of tuning, the 2 smokes were around 60, pic here of when we went to race at Mettet in belgium in around 1997. Used to enter the odd road race at Mallory with and actually won a couple! Used to piss the "real" racers off! smile
