Hey guys.. new to the forum so not sure if this is the correct location for the post. I recently bought a GSXR-1300R and have not done many miles on the motorway.I did take it to a trip on the M1 from J1 to J8 hemel hampstead. In general my speed was less than 70.. but did want to take the bike for a spin as well, so went upto 90mph or 100mph even.. Oh an I didn't have a SATNAV, so didnt get the beeps for a camera location.
I wanted to understand where the speed cameras are normally positioned on motorways.
In specific just a bit scared as I have never had a ticket before, are there any speed cameras between J1 to J8..
Any thoughts much appreciated.
Regards

None J1 to 5, not sure after that, probably only around J7/8 and I think they're only the temporary variable things.

I've never been caught, but then I always ride within safe & legal limits.

There's cameras along the 'Smart Motorway' section, so 6A to 10. They're in the overhead gantries, you cant see them clearly till you've gone under them.

Striped white lines don't mean a camera, they _might_ mean a camera. They can be painted anywhere.

Speed cameras are in the variable limit/managed motorway sections. Previously these cameras only enforced numbered limits and were inactive (or at least inactive up to taking-the-mick-speeds) when the NSL was showing. Now there are numerous reports of NIPs being issued for 82mph when the NSL is showing. Basically I wouldn't go over a true speed of 75mph on any managed motorway, regardless there being no active numbered speed limit at the time.

Also watch out for HADECS 3 cameras which are mounted over the hard shoulder and cover the whole motorway - these can also be used where there is no overhead gantry. Going 80+ on a managed motorway is just asking for either a ticket or 2 weeks of worrying about a ticket. Ain't worth it.

AFAIK there are no fixed cameras on non-managed motorways, but there are occasional camera vans.

This is a pic of a HADECS 3 camera: http://thumbsnap.com/sc/37yiRHNO.jpg

This one is mounted on an overhead gantry but it does not have to be mounted on a gantry.

The M4 to M5 managed motorway around Bristol definitely has the cameras on when the speed limit lights aren't lit. I have seen lots of motorists flashed. You can tell the regular users as even when there are clear lanes the 70mph limit is strictly obeyed.

If the managed motorway system is extended by the Nanny State we may as well buy 250cc motorbikes and 1 litre cars.

Jeez . .not able to sleep properly . . A lot of tension as I have never had a ticket before and don't want one as well . .Not on the early days on the busa . . Nor ever . .The insurance premiums would go off the roof..
Do you guys think a satnav would pick up all cameras. .might be a good idea to buy one and ride the same route to see if there are any..to get this sorted . .

A sat nav may not be up to date and will not know when cameras on managed motorways are or aren't active.
If it's going to cause you this much stress I'd get rid of the Busa and stick to something less capable of licence losing speeds to be honest.

Yeah there are HADEC mounted on various gantries up the M1 now. I tend to only do 75 max on the motorway as they are set quite low I think.

Tbh . . You need really put some effort on the throttle to go to higher speeds.. It was more of me being a silly willy . . It's the riders fault than the ride as well.. This has a more controlled power delivery than a litre bike..
Can't blame the busa . .

I thought it was police that monitor that stretch of motorway there, lots of hidden places where they park.

A GPS with camera POIs should eliminate all tickets due to fixed cameras. Provided you keep it up to date. I still would not exceed 75mph on a managed motorway though as it is not worth the stress. You could still get done by a mobile camera van though.

Take your Busa over to France. Not only are there very few camera, but French drivers actually have a clue and give an actual fk about lane discipline. Even if you are unlucky enough to get a French ticket, they can't endorse your UK licence with points. Just don't exceed the speed limit by 50km/h or more, you can be arrested for that. French D-roads (the countryside roads you want to ride on) rarely have cameras.

Pretty much anything to do with operating a motor vehicle is better on the continent. Except maybe the bump parking in Paris if you have a nice car.

How's the 'Busa by the way? I've always wanted to try one out smile

Ahh . yeah taking it to France is probably an overkill at the moment.. However , the busa has really surprised me. . I mean , I did try a fireblade, FZ800.. the bike felt a lil uncomfortable as compared to the busa.. May be because the blade is a slightly taller bike. However , I have been riding to work into Central London for the last two days and its really been quite impressive. . The throttle response is amazing as the power comes when you need it to.. I am really taking it nice and easy.. The bike handles well and is very stable.. The only downside is reversing the bike as its a bit too heavy.. I've done a fuel check and get a wee bit over 150-160 miles. I'm currently riding on the mode C, and don't know if i would be able to try the A,B modes in the near future..
