always had jap bikes, started with 2 stroke racers and went to the usual 4 stroke 4 cyl race reps. never had anything off road, cruiser or cafe racer. last 3 years have had a beautiful ducati 748sps, which luckily went up in value a little which offset the horrendous service costs to some extent.
have always liked retro stuff, wanted a modern norton but seen a lot of negative comments about the experience, then had a days test ride on the Thruxton R and immediately placed an order.

comments so far- bit limited due to 4k revs max for 300m, and bedding engine in etc. tyres also a bit greasy as new but now fine. its as good i reckon as my 748 was in bends, although i havent yet got fully confident i feel its very stable and turns in lovely. the seating and riding is spot on, albeit the seat is very firm. i might eventually have it re-padded locally.

Thanks, now where is that piggy bank :-)

brakes are superb. very very strong. its a torque monster bike, you can tell, and very quick on the test ride in sport mode, was lifting the front wheel a bit (or trying).

Ive a few plans to customise the look a bit, thats one of the attractions, Triumph have a million bits out already (if you can actually get them) and also others are starting to supply.

its too quiet by far, euro crap nonsense. pipes to come.

your boot heels tend to scuff the black side pods i've found, i've stuck a sticker on there for now as a temporary fix.

thats about it, i just love riding it, i think you could do a full day on it no worries, my 748 used to kill the wrists. this has a bit of twin vibration but is very smooth. the fairing kit comes with dropped clip ons and puts a bit more weight on your wrist but still a great riding position.

one slight glitch last night, it cut out once on coasting down to some lights, but immediately restarted, I've read a few people have had this and it was cured at the first 500m service with throttle balance reset on the ecu.

There is a dude in Geneva who rides a red and white one with some fking loud ass exhausts. Absolutely awesome.

I was at Basset (KTM, Triumph, Aprilia) in Geneva the other day (KTM ADV950 service), and will probably take out their Thruxton R demonstrator before the weather goes bad. It is a severely pretty bike, and would fit in well to my current 2-wheeled collection. But I remain to be convinced that it would ever corner better than a decently set up 748 ;-)

Don't forget 748 is 20 yrs old. The forks and rear suspension on the Thruxton R are modern and superbly suited. The brakes are better by far, and it's on modern sticky tyres. I can only tell it as I saw it. My ducati felt fine but I expected a 1200 triumph to feel lardy by comparison. Because I was so pleasantly suprised I jumped in! :-)

Yes, it's a pretty cool little cafe racer but I doubt Ducati will be considering it for sports bike benchmarking.

I've not heard one yet on some decent pipes. The old Bonneville could sound nice an aftermarket exhaust. I've seen quite a few demonstrators out as I work near a Triumph main dealer and the 'phut-phut' sewing machine noise of the standard exhaust needs to be rectified! I might see if I can get a test ride on one next year.

A few videos about on you tube with new slip ons fitted but hard to tell from those. Doesn't need to be hooligan loud just a nice burble :-)
It does fail there compared to the 748 which sounded fabulous:-)

Finally got one on Saturday. Chuffed to bits. Running in to do but it's making me smile already, 200m on clock so far on local roads.

What tail tidy have you used?

The triumph one but gone a step further and removed the final extender and rear red reflector which was just gash.
I won't have a problem for mot :-)
And can refit a reflector if ever needed.
I refitted the original led plate lamp to what was left of the bracket. looks ok but I may tweak it yet.
In an ideal world the plate would be under the seat as some of our US friends have done.

If I ever went for a Thruxton R, I could entertain adding some slip-ons to make it sound a bit fruitier, but still remaining reasonable.
Nothing like the race Termignonis on my 748R, which are possibly the most unreasonable exhausts in the whole of Christendom.

The Analog Thruxton Tail Tidy v2 is on pre-sale until the end of the month at $399, instead of $455. It looks neater than the Triumph part, but I'm not sure about its legality.

Incidentally, TTS Performance are offering a supercharger kit for the Thruxton, which was used by the bikes that Triumph fielded in the Glemseck 101 sprints. And with 139 bhp, and 157 Nm of torque, it might scare a few sportbikes.

The price is £2875 + VAT and shipping, with a twelve week lead time. So who's interested? biggrin

ooh that looks evil! i like it a lot!
i can see the customisers and tuners having a field day with the new Thruxton. i have cash literally burning a hole in my pocket for the right exhaust system but hearing/seeing one is hard work at present due to nobody having any!

traffic used to part like the red sea on that bike due to the noise.

Or just keep it standard and use the same money to buy a sportsbike?

The 748R will have to be pried out of my cold dead hands. Even if the engine blows up and it becomes FUBAR, I'll just hang it as a piece of art on the living room wall.

My other bikes are also quite efficient filtering tools: the KTM due to its massive Looming Orangeness, and the Harley blinds any motorists who dares to look in his/her mirrors with its immense swathes of chrome and polished bare metal.

If I got a Thruxton R, I'd probably need to fit a BFO air-horn to have a similar effect :-)

I had a morning at Bevans in Cardiff test riding potential replacements for my Tiger 1050. Initially I wanted an Explorer. It had everything I thought I wanted and more but jeeeez it was boring! It did everything flawlessly but it's lost too much soul. I handed it back, took a Thruxton R out for test and shall be putting a deposit down tomorrow. Black with track racer pack. Already booked in with a mate for a new paint job. Roll on November delivery!
