I had the first CBR600 when it came out in 1988 and then another in 1994. Great bikes.

An Adventure 'Ped? Is that what it is? FFS, marketing on acid. When are they going to do a super moto version?

An SV650 or MT07 sounds like what you need.

I'm new to biking aged near enough 40, and gave serious consideration to an MT-07. I trained on one and loved it. Then I looked at Street Triples before deciding that as practicality was my key concern, a Tiger 800 would be ideal. It's a heavy bugger, but it suits my commuting requirements perfectly. A colleague of mine has just bought a new R1200 GS after a few years on a Street Triple and absolutely loves it.

Genuine question, when "older" riders want to commute, why do they immediately start discussing adventure bikes?

Surely a commuter or upright naked bike is the obvious answer?
Why?

Adventure bikes usually have better weather protection and heated grips as standard...and brush guards to protect our arthritic hands.

...Because of its off road abilities and obvious filtering prowess during the urban commute the BMW GS is the choice of the dead below the neck biker.

If I ever get one of these things will someone please put me permanently out of my misery.

One mate has just got a BMW Gs but I'll excuse him because he's not well at all and he was as fast as fook until a couple of years ago.

Someone else I've known for years has also just got one but he can fook off the pussy.

The problem with the GS is suddenly coming down from being a filtering God to being the one holding everyone up.

Loved how they feel on fast A and M and even B roads but they just don't feel nye on £15k.

Gonna try to get a demo ride on a 700 Tracer, as this thread suggested, seems an awful lot of bike for the money.

I'll bet the Tiger 800 you tried was the XC with the skinny 21" front wheel.
I bought one for a mate and rode it up from Wales to Scotland; fine in the dry on motorways and sweeping A roads, but in the wet on twisty B's it was absolutely horrible.

The standard Tiger with the normal size front is a revelation in comparison; give it a try.

My 1050 Sport has the same tyre sizes as my Speed Four. I love it.

Exactly what held me up on Monday. If you are fully loaded with 15 panniers then do me a favour and stay in a lane.

If you own a GS and sit between lanes, then fk you.

Because they want to be something that they aren't and never were when they were young enough to be that thing. That's why middle aged sales account managers buy Swiss divers' watches that are capable of 200m dives even though the buyer never goes in the sea any deeper than his neck on his annual holiday to the Med. Same reason why my Dad, in his mountain rescue days, remembers seeing the same guys strolling round the same pubs in Keswick every weekend with a rucksack and a climbing rope around their shoulders. He never saw them in the hills, and at the end of the season the gear still looked like new.
