As my amount of time on the bike is steadily increasing, I've been thinking about insurance.

It would be nice to have some cover if my bike is stolen or wrecked etc. It also makes sense to have some legal and liability cover.

Can anyone recommend a good bike insurer? Anyone currently have insurance?

Thanks.

Mine is included in my contents insurance even for out of the house including accidental damage. It's an extra £2 per month through my bank on top of the usual premium.

If you're a member of British cycling then you have some cover (I forget which) and also you will have some cover from your contents insurance.

When I claimed for a theft it was £1000 max if away from home but as stolen from my garage I got the full new cost back!

Adding my bike to the contents insurance was about half the price of a stand alone policy. Extra £80 or so, compared to nearly £200.

ETA: just remembered the £80 included another bike and my laptop, opposed to just the 1 bike insured individually

I'm currently with Bikmo after I bought a couple of bikes that I couldn't afford to replace. They seemed the cheapest - British Cycling were slightly cheaper but not quite as good a set of benefits.

Up until now I've relied on contents insurance and British Cycling membership but the specific insurance covers me if I crash and it's my fault and includes clothing, accessories as well as going abroad. New for old and no excess.

Worked out at just over £20 a month for a £3.5k bike. It actually covers any bike you choose to ride up to that maximum value so I just insured my dearest and as long as they don't all get stolen from home then I'll be covered. Also you can cover all family bikes in the value as well so if riding together then again it covers up to the maximum value.

Thanks all.

As above, I'm after more cover than normal house insurance offers. I'm going to have a sift through and see who offers the best policy for me.

I'm still using M&S premium cover with unlimited contents and about 5 specified bikes. I think on the premium policy everything worth less than ~ £2000 is covered and everything over has to be specified.

Have a look at Pedalcover.
I changed over to these with significant savings.

What extra cover are you looking for? Contents policies can cover you for accidental damage (including crashing) outside of the house, (normally) providing you're not racing.

I went for Bikmo too, mainly because they cover you for accidental damage and for damage during competition.

I pay around £20 for almost £3 grand of cover (two bikes).

You also get a £10 voucher for SIS when you sign up!

edit: Also, make sure you have a good read of terms and conditions regarding theft cover. Most companies I looked at had way too many conditions, such as the bike having to be locked to an immovable object inside your home, or not covering theft if you're away from home for more than 24 hours.

Thanks. I'll take a look.

I really need to dog out the house insurance details and see what I selected on there. I can't remember if I even put the bikes on the policy now.

House insurance wouldn't even come close to covering replacement of the one most valuable bike, let alone all of them if the worst happened. So Bikmo it was for me. It does cost £30 a month, but I couldn't really afford not to.

Very much recommend, one of the cheaper bikes got nicked earlier in the year and they dealt with it extremely quickly.

I'm with Bikmo as well, nice touches like provide bike DNA and on their website you can upload photos on your bikes and spec lists so no quibbling on values, also stuff like the frame numbers etc. Its about the same price as my home insurance added on with the difference that my home cover max claim value was limited to £1000 per bike, bikmo the real value is covered.

home contents insurance covers mine (£15k single item limit) but don't expect to find the insurers via the usual bargain basement searches.

I'm covered by the ETA. It wasn't the cheapest by far but includes just about everything including sending a taxi to pick you and the bike up if you (or the bike) suffer a mechanical breakdown smile

Pedalcover for me too.Great service when I had to make a claim last year (not bike related), and nice people to deal with.
Their insurance uses a seperate policy to insure your excess which also covers your car insurance.
