I could post this in the Tech section, but I think 90% of all videos I make are bike related so thought I would try here first. My Go-Pro has finally stopped working, and will no longer charge. Have had it about 8 years - so has lasted well. I did look to replace last year, when the 4 was on sale, and noticed that the 5 was due for release soon, and on looking today it is released now.
I want the action one rather than the session, as although I don't use the screen for viewing whilst on the go, I do use it for postioning the camera. £100 is a lot for a screen - but I would want it.
Anyone have one?
Curious on noise levels whilst on the bike (was one of the disappointments of my very old Go-Pro), also battery power, and how much storage is required for videos in high frame rate? To compare my current device ran out of battery before it ran out of storage (32Gb) after approx 2 hours. Are they any better on battery and noise nowadays?

I can only speak regarding my hero 4 with all the bells and whistles, and its basically the same story with the sound and battery I'm afraid. Little to no improvement over my old hero 2. Even when talking to GoPro reps directly, you get various answers (all of which were incorrect in the end). So earlier, GoPro was saying an hour of battery life for 4K footage. But in reality, it’s closer to 1hr 31mins when I tested it."

Could you not just power it off the bike battery?
I've got a 1,2 and 4. Battery life has gotten worse but picture quality has gotten better. Sound quality is the same but can be a big difference depending on where you position. I also found a little bit of electrical tape over the mic quitened down the worst of the wind noise but kept engine noise ok.
On the newer ones you don't need the screen. You can use Bluetooth or wifi or whatever it is to send the image to an app on your smartphone. Just remember to turn that off once you have it positioned or it chews through the battery even faster.

Especially in relation to the bluetooth to phone, and not requiring a screen. Unfortunately due to where I expect to use it the most (in the desert) I think I will still require the screen, as getting the phone in and out will be a PITA. However is food for thought.
The battery is still the weak point by all accounts, and the fact you cannot record whilst USB plugged in also limits use in cars, seems like a fundamental design flaw. Based on this feedback, I thought looking at the prices of the Hero 4 may save me some cash, but a brief look seems to suggest they are more expensive than the Hero 5! Have they become the ATV2 of their generation for a reason?

Just returned from the French Alps where GP4 and GP5 were on sale at all the big stores. GP4 definitely not being discounted as it has the same stellar image quality as GP5 but with more flexibility and power options. 3rd party GP4 batteries are plentiful and cheap - I just carry 3 extra batteries which are enough for a whole day and get recharged by a single USB adaptor within an hour or so.spareparts said:

Sorry Ade for stupid questions, but can you recharge direct ? Or do you still need the Go Pro "housing" with battery in to charge? Not used anything since my Hero!Are you dead set on a Go-Pro?

Hi Chris. I've not tried the 5 yet but as it wont record while being charged from an external battery I probably wont bother. I have the Hero 4 Black & Hero 4 Session and TBH for the bike the session is by far the better camera. It's much quicker to pair with the phone to setup and as it's one button to turn on and record it's simples to use, even with gloves on. Much smaller mean less vibration and more mounting options too. No case to faff around with and with a front and rear mic the audio is pretty good too.
I didn't bother with a GoPro.
We use them commercially and they are a PITA 99% of the time.
My own use I got the VirbX via Decathlon online for £279
No screen BUT the Virb app negates the need, perfect sound, image stabilisation, true GPS, G-Metrics, overlays, all gopro mounts work, its waterproof without needing a case, wifi, bluetooth, will run from a power lead and charge at the same time, output video, external mic, etc, etc, etc.
Will also work with Garmin satnavs to locate, start/stop, view too.

I played around with Go-pro's for a while, and got p'd off with the batteries and various other little bits that kept going wrong
Use a Garmin VribXE now, which although a little more expensive at around £250, it doesn't have all the hassles of a go-pro and overlays all your data for you (if that's what you want)

Yes it will record whilst plugged in to external power, what most people don't realise is that you can actually take the usb port door off to be able to plug it in whilst it is in its cage. Stupid question of the day before I click to proceed. I assume the "cage" is built in now? i.e. no need to house the camera in a separate "cage". e.g. this is in the cage?

I don't think I need this though for my use on the bike. Although I may get later for in the water if I get a Jet-Ski.
