Stupid question of the day before I click to proceed. I assume the "cage" is built in now? i.e. no need to house the camera in a separate "cage". e.g. this is in the cage?

I have seen a separate waterproof cage that is coming out soon which looks like the old cage:-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/GoPro-Super-Suit-HERO5-Ca...

I don't think I need this though for my use on the bike. Although I may get later for in the water if I get a Jet-Ski.
Not built in, there is still a thin plastic cage that adds the mounting point, but the camera is fully waterproof so you would theoretically not even need the super suit for jet skiing. See this for what I mean, can get better photo tonight when I get home though:

I see - that picture makes sense. Many Thanks. Also answers my next question on if it fitted original mounts - which I can see it does.

By the way your videos look superb. Was the video with the Speedo on it made using the Go-Pro software, and just the raw footage? Or was there a third party tool needed for that? I like the idea of that!

Cheers. That was with the GoPro Quik software, you can choose which dials to show too. That shows all of them. It is a bit of a faff working out how to get them exported but once done, you can then use whatever other video editing software you like to edit the footage. Be warned, the GP does slice videos at about 3.7GB which at 4k is about 9 minutes duration and the GPS track is only relevant to each portion of video.

Hi Chris. I've not tried the 5 yet but as it wont record while being charged from an external battery I probably wont bother. I have the Hero 4 Black & Hero 4 Session and TBH for the bike the session is by far the better camera. It's much quicker to pair with the phone to setup and as it's one button to turn on and record it's simples to use, even with gloves on. Much smaller mean less vibration and more mounting options too. No case to faff around with and with a front and rear mic the audio is pretty good too.
Yes it will record whilst plugged in to external power, what most people don't realise is that you can actually take the usb port door off to be able to plug it in whilst it is in its cage. Does make it not waterproof though.
Other reports have said it does not record continuously when plugged in (as it would be when on the bike). However, if you are doing timelapse, I assume it charges in between the stills which is slightly different compared to being 'on' full time. Have you found this to be the case?

There is no time between the stills as it is a 15 second exposure, continuous shooting for over 7 hours/1700+ photos. The Karma grip has an external battery in it so assume it will record properly when plugged in. Can try it out later if you really want me to.

That would be great thumbup
This kind of 'feature' may only have been an issue with early firmware versions - I imagine it could be easily fixed with a firmware update. I'd like to hear confirmation, however, before I pull the trigger on one. The image stabilisation is the real USP imho over the GP4, and image vibration is the plague of most of my vids on the bike or when skiing.

Bump this post later else I will forget, about half 7/8ish would be about perfect biggrin

Camera has been recording for 45 minutes (4k/25fps) and is still at 96% battery. (not fully charged to start with). It is using a 2.1amp battery pack though rather than a 1amp that I am guessing those that reported it not charging were using.

Ace thumbup maybe that's the solution! All good as I only run 2.1A USBs on the bike.

Battery pack ran out at 1h30 (40GB) so now got it plugged into mains, running fairly warm but will update in morning. For on the move lengthy recording 2fps timelapse video is pretty damn good tbh.

I have about 4 hours of video from a recent road trip, and it's just yawn inducing trying to get 4hrs down to about 3mins.

DL this and watch it, about 6 or so hours in 4 minutes from my recent trip to Iran https://1drv.ms/v/s!AuO4-SowtKA6q_hrEvgIvpsYCRl4Xw all shot in 2fps time lapse video in my GP5.

I placed my order yesterday - got the HD5 PRO, 128Mb Sandisk extreme card, and additional battery and charger. Gets delivered today in UK, and I will pick up when I am there next week.

So will be a couple of weeks before I get to test, but looking forward to it.

So I now have my GoPro Hero 5 in my hands, and just charging the batteries, and having a light play. One of the key things discussed in this thread was the charging whilst recording.

I just want to clarify something - and HappyMidget please feel free to correct me as I could be wrong here - it has been known before! I can record and charge at the same time (opening the door at the side and plugging the USB in). What I cannot do is have it in the case and record. When opening the door it will not fit back in the case, and therefore on the mount.

I don't think it actually matters for me, but I think Andy and Ade were looking to keep charging whilst recording on the bike. Assuming to keep recording it needs to be in the cage, so it can be mounted.

Happy to be corrected either by HappyMidget on my understanding, or Andy/Ade on their requirements!

The door comes off ;) As I said earlier, this does mean it is not fully waterproof, but sure you could knock up some form of protection.

So it does! I was trying not to be a heavy handed buffoon - but with a bit of force I have removed the door. Many Thanks!

I can confirm it works exactly as stated further up this thread! smile

Yes, Chris is right - the GoPro would need to be secured (in a frame mount?) and be waterproofed. If the door has to come off, I suppose a blob of silicon may be a temporary solution?
