Tucked up the hornet for winter but have been out to start it up and let it run till warm a few times a month. Going over the bike I noticed this stuff.

Is it corrosion? It's kind of chalky and mostly rubs off. It was pretty clean when I parked it.

Clean it up as best you can and leather some ACF50 or GT85 on it

Does look like oxidisation and your jubliee clip doesn't look too clever either.

If you don't want to spring for some ACF50 spray some WD40 or GT85 on a rag and rub over anything else that looks like that.

Its not going to end in a pile of dust at the end of winter but it won't look nice.

you should be more worried about idling it for a few minutes... if you're going to fire her up ride her. It'll do more bad than good if you dont

Don't bother running up to warm it up every now and again, disconnect battery, put under cover, 4 months later reconnect battery, check tyre pressures and ride it, its all you need to do.

Stop doing that. It just creates more moisture.
Just disconnect battery and leave it over winter unless you are taking it out and riding it.
Cover in acf 50 before you store it.

Spray it on, you don't have to apply it with leather.

This is you will not get the bike warmed up like you will on a ride, Even a short one

After standing for a long time I would remove the plug cap or if you can crank it with ignition off for a few moments to ensure the oil is circulated before it fires will do no harm.

If you don't have ACF 50 you can thin some SAE 30 oil with paraffin into a garden pressure sprayer and coat all the metal bits then just leave it.
A good clean with a cheap engine cleaner before you want to ride and blow it dry with a compressor and your good to go.
Paraffin does no harm to electrical connectors either and will allow the oil to penitrate into all the small places

Just buy a can of wd40 and give all the metal parts exept the brake discs a good spray if its a carburetor bike turn off the petrol and run the engine so it emptys the carbs , this helps to avoid the fuel going gummy ....
