All that niche marketing done by Ducati immediately ruined by a middle aged bloke on the Scrambler.

I'm sorry but I've seen so many 'old blokes with a new Belstaff & Davida Helmet on a Scrambler thinking they look cool' it's far from original, almost looks like they have joined a club with matching uniform.

You just need the 'Old Guys Rule' tee-shirt too.

I think you've missed a trick by dismissing the Triumph in pursuit of branding.

Oh - please don't do it to impress others, I'll drop myself in it now:

Was loaned a R9T while my bike was in for it's service, nice summers evening, thought I'd head to St Ives for a leather jacket & jeans pose.

Yes it turned heads, mainly mid-50's blokes tugging at their bored wives arms pointing out the bike they think was soooo cool. Unfortunately no young (or old) ladies suffered whiplash looking.

I even took a photo. It went straight back the next day & I borrowed another S1000R!

Why dont you just go the whole hog and just buy an XT or similar classic?

Way cooler than any of those options and an appreciating classic ..

+1

There are some stunning examples up at the moment. Nice and authentic, far cooler and at least you have a real nostalgic connection with it. I've just bought retro, where new bikes will depreciate, excellent examples of vintage bikes will hold and appreciate. If you're doing big miles then it's probably a no no, but for occasional high days and Sundays would be great!

There's a 1976 mint looking one owner 5,700 miler up for sale on the usual place.

Edit...
oops, just re read and see you're looking to commute, scrap that idea then ^

Don't ask me why but I find myself strangely drawn to one of these, saw it at excel a couple of years back, I think I like the simplicity of it, the spec says 70mph which sounds a little optimistic for a 125 4 stroke of this ilk but here's a link;

Eh? So a person of 55 isn't allowed to enjoy a bike they like for fear it's seen as a purchase made to impress others?

- say the man who rides a bmw....

This 49yr old bought a S1000R because it impressed me, not to impress others.

And the same reason exists for the OP buying his Duke. You were seduced by marketing and aligned yourself to a race bike you felt matched the image you have of yourself.

Belittling the OP is the same as me sounding off what I thought of middle aged men who ride bmw because they think they are great motorcycles. But I wouldn't do that.

Suggest you google what a S1000R actually is, it isn't a race rep.

I've done the 'racebikes' (RG500, FZR1000s, Fireblades, GSXR1000) because at the time, there was no alternative that handled and they were still capable 2 up etc. I bought a Supernaked before they were understood (Superduke in 2006), because it suited me.

I wanted 1 bike to replace my SD & Hayabusa, one that still handled but could cover distances too. I liked how the MT-10 fitted, after riding it wasn't impressed and wasn't going to buy it because it was 'this years latest'. I called into BMW by chance to give the S1000R a go as it was an alternative and it sold itself (and the extra £3k) to me.

I've only ever wanted to impress myself, not others. TBH the lifestyle image manufactures try to sell quite frankly annoys me (BMW/Ducati/Harley), I just want a bike that does what I want it to do.

The OP asked us what his friends would think, I pointed out it's been done so much before (bit like the middle aged blokes on race reps with matching leathers we used to see). Rather than going down the branded image route, I'm sure the OP would have as much fun on an entry level Street Triple/MT-7/MT-9 with a decent quality normal bike jacket if that's what he wanted.

Like I admitted above, a middle age bloke trying to impress others will only impress other middle age blokes.
