Because it happened in London and London has the highest bike theft rate in the UK?

Now, don't shout at me because I am old too and it doesn't take much to make me all upset and weepy.

Did anyone else notice that the only person apparently to try and help out when a certain machete-wielding went on the rampage in Landan tarn was a north-easterner...? biggrin

I think the best course of action would be to knock over the bikes they're on, they're hardly going to run after you.
I think you'd need a planned attack with at least the same number of vigilantes to thieves, possibly two per thief. It could get quite nasty after that.

Great video for fund raising but I recon if you asked a tealeaf to get it off it wouldn't last more than a few seconds. For one thing it still needs a padlock...

Scary video, london is a no go zone for me on the bike after watching stuff like that.
This was my R1 and was a replacement for a new MT-10 that was stolen in July last year. I have read many of these comments and agree with a fair few. I think it's disappointing that I can't ride my pride and joy in one day per week and park it outside my office (50 Berkeley St) without been criticized as being stupid because its of a high value (mostly financed BTW) Do we really live in a society whereby you can't put a disc lock on your bike and park it and not expect it to still be there? I had to suffer the embarrassment of being quizzed by investigators as if I was trying to do some sort of insurance fraud because it was a second bike stolen within a year.. Why can't the council widen the bays and put in clamps which secure the front and back tyres?. annoying thing is I would only every park the bike underground unless that bay was free because i naively thought nobody would steal it from there.. Anyway message is dont work hard and buy anything nice because you will be called stupid for using it.. new insurance quote 2k... frown

yes i would of had a go had I seen it happening and I would of helped any other fellow biker who was suffering the same predicament.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your new bike, like you say, you shouldnt have to worry about this kind of thing happening, especially in a public area with so many onlookers.

However.....
From the number of videos that have already been posted showing this kind of thing happening, did you not think it could happen to you? Theres no way I'd be leaving my 6 year old sportsbike parked in a city centre for 8 hours a day, nevermind a brand new R1. I wouldnt be able to concentrate at work knowing my P&J was exposed to the scum that may be lingering around the bike. Could you not just run a cheap bike for the commute and keep the R1 for the weekends? Not ideal I know but hopefully these gangs wouldnt even look at a 15 year old blade and move onto something else.

You have my every sympathy, Wl11ams. Absolutely crushing watching that video. I agree - as far as I'm concerned I should be able to take a fking gold brick and leave it on the ground and it should still be there when I come back. I really cannot get my head round people who think it's ok to help themselves to other peoples property.

As would I - I'm no "hard case" but I'll sure have a go. I've spent enough nights locked up down the local police station so I do know what I'd be in for.

Why would I be prepared to take a kicking? I and the OH got our bikes stolen plus all the contents of my garage just coming up three years ago. The insco weaseled out of paying all but 2000 on the basis of some small print that even they only spotted as they were ordering replacement items.

So I lost about 15K worth of stuff and two motorbikes. I've had to replace all that stuff out of my own pocket - not only did I work to earn the money to buy it, I had to do the same to replace it - it's been really hard and I'm only just done. That's been no holidays etc. All cos some fking stbag didn't want to work and fancied selling all my st for a couple of hundred quid.

Then there's been the car and bike insurance issues - 3 bikes and 2 cars to insure, where both named drivers have a total loss claim to declare. It's all been through the fking roof for three years. Luckily this comes to an end on Friday where I can now (with certain insurers) answer the question about claims in the last three years with a "no" (the GFs R1 is currently sorned and uninsured (with the wheels off) til this three year period kicks over as the cover ran out a couple of weeks ago.

The sheer anger, hassle, frustration and finacial hardship this has caused me beggars belief. Not to mention the utter paranoia - I still have sleepless nights. I'd have a go and risk an almost certain kicking if there was the slightest chance I would be able to hold on to my property. Utter utter fkers! I hate thieves so much.

Sure. I wasn't suggesting it was a solution, merely a great idea and a step in the right direction to help defeat the angle grinder mob.

It's like all these things they are there to slow them down to increase the risk of them getting caught. However, if they're brazen enough to work on the security devises with power tools on a crowded street in the middle of London while everyone just stands around watching then I'm afraid there's not much that will stop them.

Thing is I only ride up once a week probably if the weather is nice and normally park it underground.. I was stupid but considered the bay right in front of the Mayfair bar to be safe... I never thought they would try it on there.. The last bike stolen was in a bay in one of the back streets.. Anyway lesson learned..

Occasionally i have to park in town, and I can never understand the following. I still see bikes that are not locked up at all. I can never quite believe it - I'm paranoid about leaving mine, even with locks, then I find I'm parked next to someone with nothing. Amazing. Last time was this bike I was next too, not a lock to be seen:

Curiously my insurers insists that my bikes are secured with Pragmasis chains, Squire locks, Torc anchors etc in my locked, alarmed brick garage. Not insured within a certain distance of the house against theft.

However they don't insist on said locks when I'm out and about. confused

(If they did I'd be fked - I'd need a support vehicle to carry the chain and lock)

So many examples of theft... i really dont blame the people that never come back to biking after a theft.

My scooter was stolen nearly 10 years ago now.. and although cheap and disposable.. a more expensive toy could have been taken just as easily... so i never replaced it or did my DAS which was the whole reason for me starting out with the scooter in the first place.

Im waiting for security to improve.. It seems worse than car crime in the 80's and early 90's with crooks even steeling police cosworths and lotus carltons ffs.
