Noticed a few suspect characters around the West Drayton/ Uxbridge area recently (more than usual anyway). A few peds with no plates, a couple of kids on a ktm 125 followed me for a bit a couple of weeks ago and yesterday I was passed by a clearly stolen Matt Grey Street Triple, rode straight past a police car with no plates. Hopefully my beaten up old XJR400 doesn't tickle their fancy. Makes me think twice about taking one of my nicer bikes to work though.

On a slightly unrelated note last year someone left a pinched scooter with swapped plates outside my garage, I called the police and it was removed within the hour.

just by way of an update on the R1 that was stolen. Gefion insurance still hasn't paid out nearly two months later!! apparently waiting for a police report. like, go online. on the bright side, the police have said they have had a promising anonymous tip off so the case remains open. fingers crossed all round..
There isn't a police report for the theft?

Lets hope that they don't start hitting the DVSA centre, lots of unattended new bikes parked up all day long.

There seem to be more cases of the public fighting back now. Hopefully the tide is turning and the public are not willing to stand by while the cowardly scummers do what they like any more - the community stepping in to make up for the lack of police support. Then the police will have to step up as they can't allow themselves to be embarrassed by the public.

I think that one happened a while ago, the woman in the red/white leathers ended up getting hit round the head with a hammer.

I saw a new one today - a stolen mp3 being ridden two-up. The passenger was holding an obviously stolen bicycle cross-ways i.e. left to right across the bike. Big grins on their faces. So they're obviously using them to nick (potentially dozens) of cycles a week too. Think about it, thy can range far and wide, angle grind or chop off spindly bike locks and get away with the goods so easily.

I also saw another stolen moped being wheelied and driven like a up Edgware Road. All this within a 20 minute period.

Well Brexit will sort that Pole out and get him back to his own country so the lads on the scooters can get a proper job that he's stolen off them.

Or something like that.

Unless the vigilantes operate covertly like the IRA (and that recruitment poster isn't particularly indicative of that) it is fairly predictable how this will pan out, as unsurprisingly the Police will have no problems allocating time and resources to apprehending the vigilantes as opposed to the real criminals.

Should be easy enough to knock a knife out of his hand with a basball bat or a crowbar. Fair play to that guy. Time to start getting tough.

Look at the video here frown

Something needs to be done about this sooner rather than later.

This is getting really serious! Knocking people off their bike to steel it is going to end up with someone getting very hurt.

The police have to do something (and be seen to be doing something) as a matter of urgency. If not I, like many others I'm sure, who would not normally get involved in anything like this, will be calling Jack th' Lad and going T-Max hunting! If the choice is between getting involved in physical violence while hinting the thieves or getting involved in physical violence while they knock me off my bike to steel it, then I know which one I'd choose and it appears the second option is only a matter of time.

So excluding one or two places like Heathrow, vast majority of places there's 1-2 bikes nicked a day. That's insane. I looked at commuting into London by bike (Soho), and even considering "secure" car parks, none of it seems remotely safe. fk that.

I'm not sure what options are open to the police? If they give chase and someone gets hurt they would more than likely be suspended pending an investigation and they stand a very good chance of loosing their jobs. Just look at the Henry Hicks case. Following his death and although he was found with seven bags of skunk and multiple phones the coppers are still suspended.

Quote

"Following the inquest, Ch Supt Catherine Roper, the borough commander for Islington, said in a statement: “Our pursuit policy, which is based on national guidance, is kept under constant review. In light of today’s narrative delivered by the jury and any recommendations made by the coroner in her report, and the IPCC, we will once again review that policy.”

The police driver, a PC who can only be named as officer A, had said he had not been “in pursuit” of the rider. He previously told the jury: “In my heart I knew that he hadn’t seen me. He gave me absolutely no indication that he was aware of me.”

Hassell said she would send a prevention of death report “in light of the jury’s conclusion” so that lessons may be learned"

Like most anti-social behaviour, this will be a small number of people doing a lot of stealing and not a larger number of people occasionally nicking something. So pursuing them shouldn't be the approach, catching them in the act should be. Just use 'bait' bikes in certain locations under surveillance and jump them in the act. It should be possible to see the results relatively quickly.

Likewise, a small tracker hidden in a bait bike would allow the police to understand where the bikes are going and follow further down the food chain.
