Hypothetically you want something in the garage to, not lose much money, look pretty, and start when you decide to take something out once a year.

Must be more special than a lava red r1.

Or buy another lava red r1?

For looks, the Duc wins every time, for riding like a tool the BMW wins every time.

If you want that special feeling once in a while the Duc has to win surely?

Looks are personal preference, but a s1000rr is a much better bike than an 848 evo.

I'd probably go for the Ducati, as you certainly don't need the extra grunt of the S1000RR as a road bike and the 848 is a stunner.

If you're sentimentally attached to Lava red R1s (as I am), nothing else is going to be a Lava red R1 other than another Lava red R1.

Therefore I say get the R1 and the Ducati, just so the second bike is different enough to make it worth having two.

I don't think another lava red r1 will be my old lava red r1. And i'd know as I bought that twice.

So one or the other.

My vote should be obvious. I love this bike, so much character and just a joy to ride.

However, in the interest of a fair fight, surely 1198 or S1000RR would make more sense? 1198 start at £7k, aren't S1000RR about the same?

In your described circumstances I'd discount both and go RSV4.

However the S1000 makes more sense.

I've tried buying a bike because it makes more sense - it didn't last long smile

Well.. I had an 848, and I've ridden an S1000RR a couple of times (that doesn't make me an expert, granted).

For occasion, and feeling special, the 848 won hands down. It boils your nuts in traffic, first is stupid long, the lock is hillarious, and it's a very stretched out position (for a 5'10 stumpy like me) and uncomfortable as hell.. but the the noise and the midrange are awesome, and it's beautiful.

The S1000RR is undoubtedly faster, and is probably more likely to start on the button.. but it reminds me of a fast honda (car) - it might have a frothing mental top end, but yer nan could ride it down the shops (and on the road how much can you use the frothing bit?). Never rode it on the track. Did ride the 848 on the track, and I sucked - couldn't make it turn. I'm order of magnitude faster on an old carbed R6 just 'cos I can actually ride it.

S1000RR for me. Ridden the 848 and it left me underwhelmed compared to my 1098R. Assuming the S1000RR is an improved K5 (not rode the BMW), then it must be fairly decent.

I too have an '05 Lava Red R1, and love it.

However, I've got the itch for a V of some description. If I did change, I think the 2 on my short-list are an RSV4 APRC, or the 899 (approx £10K budget). I just don't know, fairly sure I'm going to change, but just don't know which one. The 899 is a thing of beauty, but will I regret down-sizing? 899 would be a newer model than the RSV4 I could get. RSV4 sounds mental, looks pretty good and will out-perform my R1.

S1000RR is on my list in future, but I need a V!

Good luck with your dilemma.

Just save your money and hacksaw the standard exhaust off just behind the collector box. You'll get the same sound and you can demonstrate your mechanical prowess and mastery of litre bikes by playing tunes on the rev limiter in neutral. Bikelyfe bruv.

You like to thrash an engine. You like to give it a bit from cold. You leave the bike sitting for long periods. You expect zero maintenance. An 848 will get on your tits.

I agree with some of this, except the engine thrashing. That's exactly why I love my 848. If you're thrashing a 200bhp S1000RR on the road you're dulusional or an idiot in my opinion. Even on trackdays 99% of the riders aren't getting close to a geniune thrashing, and the few that are should stop showing off and go racing wink

Edit to add. I can't really thrash an 848 either, but you can at least go through a few gears; and just give it the lot here and there without being completely irresponsible
