Got my new to me 1050XT delivered yesterday which with 2100 miles is totally mint. Normally I'd cover the whole bike in XCP rust blocker but it picks up dirt like nothing else and is an absolute bd to remove - albeit protecting brilliantly.

Has anyone got longer term experience of ceramic coating? Does it do as good a job as XCP etc? I despise washing bikes so would rather avoid it where possible.

Ceramic coatings are for paint usually and xcp is for everything else.

Why can't bike manufacturers use better corrosion resistant materials? Would it really be that much more expensive to use stainless fixings?
I once had a Yamaha XT660X. Spokes went rusty seemingly overnight. Since then I have had a KTM 690 SMC - fixings were coated in some water based concoction that went rusty, but the spokes were decent stuff so didn't rust.

I'd like a photo. The red and white V-Stroms reminded me of the Marlboro paint schemes.

XCP seems like Waxoyl to me.

With unfinished bolt heads inc. brake caliper bolts and hose clips I'd be temped to get some XCP in a container and brush on it using a packet of kiddies watercolour brushes from a supermarket.

I've used a mixture of XCP Rust Blocker and Clear coat at the moment. Clear coat on the wheels and brake fixings (pads and discs protected from it). Sure enough the bike is bloody filthy now. Pic attached prior to ride out.

Freddie Dobbs on his YouTube channel pushed something that sounds like STP or SP something or other that comes in an aerosol, he sprays his Triumph with it.

I like your V-Strom but it's too big for me and I like to be able to get my feet down.

Freddie is a nice guy but he’s clueless on anything vaguely mechanical.

STP do a range of sprays but they aren’t known for rust protection like XCP or ACF. They have a WD40 clone but it doesn’t seem to be readily for sale in the UK.

Errrrrr.... Sorry Freddie, it's called GT85 whether it's as protective as ACF50 or XCP I don't know.

Descriptions read like it could be a WD40 type spray.

I've just ran into the issue with xcp picking up dirt. Does ACF50 do the same? Would it avoid this?

ACF will attract slightly less dirt but not by a lot.

Thanks. I have some but not used it yet.

GT85 will provide virtually no rust protection.

Agree, GT85 is basically WD40. I'd go for AFC 50 or Bilt Hamber dynax UC clear wax film.

Aren't most bikes frames and engine made of aluminum alloys these days? Won't using stainless in aluminum a result in galvanic corrosion.

Presumably a sacrificial zinc anode somewhere might help, which has now got me wondering what my Givi rack is made of as that seems to be corroding faster than anything else biggrin

I had a Triumph which at 18 months old was riddled with galvanic corrosion on multiple fasteners. I’ve not had the issue on other bikes and think they might use coatings to prevent it.

I'm going through many of the fastners on this bike at the moment and adding a bit of anti seize grease to try and avoid problems in the future!

I’ve had bikes ceramic coated previously, paintwork, plastics and metal parts.

I’ve previously used ACF50 and XCP as well.

Without doubt the ceramic coating outperforms the likes of ACF and suchlike.

Because they don't really exist - the only way to really protect things is use paint or other barrier coatings which are delicate.

The constant wet/dry with salt, dirt etc in the mix is just a nightmare for materials used in all weather.
