I'm considering starting to use a moped or small bike to commute, but the rules on licenses doesn't appear to be that straight forward.

I passed my car driving test in 1998 and have held a full license ever since. Does that mean I can just apply for a provisional motorbike license and then ride any motorbike under 125cc with L plates and not carrying a pillion passenger?

Thanks.

Your license should have provisional motorcycle entitlement (check the paper part). You will need to do CBT (£100, takes a day) before you can ride a motorcyle (under 125cc) on the road, but no such requirement for a moped of no more than 50cc.

Doesn't a full car license cover up to 50cc on L plates?

Was editing my post to add exactly that - providing your license was obtained prior to Feb 2001.

Thanks all.

Re the 50cc, I think a full car license pre 2001 allows you to ride a moped on L plates, with a moped being a bike limited to 50cc and a top speed of 31 mph.

May I suggest a pair of Nike Air as a cheaper & slightly speedier alternative rofl
