How long to keep a helmet?

A return to biking is is on the cards, and I've just checked out my lid which I've had for about 10 years. I've never dropped it and it looks in good nick. However I seem to remember reading that they need replacing after a certain amount of time. Is this right? If so, where's a good place to check out a new full face helmet on a budget of about £150?

I think the recommended change time is 5 years or after an impact. Arai for example give a 5 year warranty/service on their helmets but TBH I've used older helmets and felt OK about it, I've just replaced my (Arai) helmet which was about 7 yrs old and it still looks good/fits well but it does depend on how much use and sunlight they've seen.

I don't think there's any legal requirement to change after a certain time but I'd probably replace a 10 year old one even if it has been stored in a cool dark place, it may well protect you in a crash but there's only one way to find out.

As for a replacement, I like Arai (even if they do only score 3 stars on the 'box-ticking' sharp ratings) but not sure you'd get one for £150 but I'm sure there's plenty of choice at that price point; Shoei, AGV etc.

I wouldn't buy a £60 helmet, even if it did score 5 stars in the Sharp ratings.......

Just picked up an AGV S4 for £180 from HG can be bought cheaper online though, they also score the full 5* so a decent mid range lid and comfy too. Easy to get tinted visors for as they are based on the AGV stealth which has been round a while.

Hmm, so if it busts wide open in an accident you get your money back?

I just bought a new Givi, for £100. It'll do the job. There are better helmets about, and more expensive helmets, but I pee on the old "how much is your head worth?" blarney.

If everybody followed that ethic we'd all be wearing £5000 F1 helmets. And £3000 leather racing suits, with so much body armour bristling out that we look like Robocop.

It does seem strange that when SHARP tests were done and when Ride did it's tests both found "cheap" helmets that preformed better than some 'more expensive' but well known brands! Hmmmm! Just perhaps, there isn’t a direct correlation between price and levels of protection!

The most important thing with a helmet is fit. Find the helmet that fits you, then worry about the price.
