Coming into London and as the traffic grinds to a halt I start filtering inside 10secs I pass a police motorbike in the middle lane, there are 4 bikes, 3 naked bikes and me with panniers on. The other bikes sod off through the very narrow gaps and I pick up plod on my tail.
Now this is way distracting especially whilst filtering, he follows me for 5 miles down the A40 and then the lights turn red, I stop first at the lights and he pulls along side flips his helmet up.

Now I fear the worst, then he says, "thats a BMW K1200S, I have just been testing the BMW k1200GT as a police bike, ride carefully "

Phew !!

I was coming back from Bike Safe in Hendon this year when I went onto the south bound north circular... I went on a point where it has 5 lanes... and Obviously, I assumed it was a NSL so I wound on the power till it wouldn't go any faster , 2 seconds later I saw the blur of what looked like a blur of a 40 MPH repeater sign...

Oppp's... rolled off the throttle...

30 seconds later, I joined a que of traffic... and then I noticed 2 police bikes in my mirror...

Ohhhhhh Shhhhiiii...

So I just played it cool... filtered normally... until I got to a narrow bit of traffic... I thought... no too narrow (especially with them following)... so stayed in the centre of a lane... and they filtered past... Then I noticed that they were on these vintage 1950's / 1960's police bikes... so I waited 20 seconds... and then followed them...

I ended up just watching their technique... which was excellent, but I still wonder how they appeared in my mirror so quickly... I don't think I overtook them...

I posted similar ages ago. Was on the A12/Eastern Avenue, making progress with another bike. T'was a 50 limit and we were at, well whatever! Anyways, I like to think I'm quite an observant rider, and always checking the mirrors. One second nothing there, the next full of big white police bike. Rolled off, and he came along side, told us to slow down, and sped off.
Caught up with him in the traffic, and he was just strolling along tapping on various windows telling people to put their belts on.get off the phone that sort of thing. Top bloke!!

Usually get a nod from the biker bibs as well.

Like you, I don’t like it when plod is behind me and following me but I do like to follow one of them when they are making progress. The levels of observation, concentration and anticipation are simply stunning and offer a master class in how it should be done.

I've seen those same vintage Police bikes coming from the Ace Cafe heading out to Hangar Lane. That's probably why they appeared so quickly if you were heading from Hendon southbound... I don't think they are coppers - just Joe Public with vintage bikes.

Shame the same can't be said of PC Bobby Copper in his Volvo or Focus. Indicators? Nah, why bother, the rest of us can just guess where you might be going. Lane discipline? Speeding? They're no better than the rest of us and IMHO if they're not perfect they have no right to criticise us (let alone be able to issue tickets).
Even Police bikers seem to have gone downhill since limited-tenure came in.

Yesterday I was driving down a street with cars parked either side, room in the middle single file over speed bumps. Cop bike coming at me fast lit up like a Christmas tree. Nice technique riding around the bumps on what looked like a Pan. I pulled in real tight, more than necessary to give him tons of room. Clearly he knew I was a top observant best driver in town kinda guy, and despite the emergency status and breathtaking speed Chips was displaying, he raised his hand high off the bar to give me a marvellous thank you wave. Clearly he respected my talents behind the wheel. I felt all warm and fuzzy inside afterwards. Oh no, not one of those accidental gay moments again laugh
