Haven't bought one for a few years but can say that when I got my first road helmet, a Shoei, it was clear there were two types of shape. I class them as Shoei and AGV but am sure that's far from accurate.
Broadly, I fit the Shoei type but the AGV type is too tight at the mouth and forehead while being sloppy at the temples. I've had Shoei ever since.
The same thing seemed to happen on a few different helmets but those brands stuck in my mind as the two major names offering two very different products.
So the only advice I can offer is to get down to a bike spares shop and try a few on, you will quickly appreciate the differences in manufacturers' shapes and sizes and can pick something appropriate from that starting point.

the sharp rating says the lid im thinking of getting is a 4 star, but i would rather get a raid 2 after a while.
the old saying 'you get what you pay for' comes into it.
I guess one thing the Sharp rating isn't going to tell you is how they perform in terms of comfort, noise and fogging up. Actually, thats more than one thing. As you were.the old saying 'you get what you pay for' comes into it.
indeed, the one thing i dont want to happern during my cbt is my lid to steam up to buggery.
had that happern when go-karting and basically had to run the last three quarters of the race with either a steamed up visor that all i could see out of was blur, or half open and having 60-80mph winds attacking my eyes :/

There are two top tier brands in helmets, Arai & Shoei. These two are the only ones that use different size shells for the different sizes.
The other helmets use different amounts of padding to create the different sizes.
Normally you are a Sheoi shape head or an Arai shape head.
With a helmet their are two considerations to take into account
1 - Budget, generally get the best you can afford. If you get a £30 jobbie from Lidl etc, is your head really only worth £30?
2 - Cormfort, the helemt doesn't move much and is close to your head, if you are using the helemt for 2 hours at a time make sure that there are not extra stresses on any part of your head. make sure it is not lose as they will shake when on the road. Remember that the lining will compress slightly over time.
All IMO,
Tim.

Before I buy a helmet I ask how much is my head worth to me?
I agree but personally i'm willing to spend anything between not alot and about £400 quid on a lid and ultimately whatever fits nicest and feels the most comfortable gets the prize.Obviously if its in some bonkers colour and you can get lots of pretty visors for it is a bonus..

First 'other make' i looked at HJC -
HJC HQ-1
3 shell sizes ensuring fine fitting.
exactly the same as Shoei and Arai.
