Ian,
I jumped on a VFR400 after passing because I fell in love with them a long time ago, but... as well as that, I found that a 400 had just the right amount of power that meant I wouldn't be ringing the hell out of it in 2 months and ending up in a ditch. I really have to push the thing to scare myself as opposed to 'just opening the throttle fully'. It takes a bit more than that to get a 400 to fly off the handle, and I like that. I see why people get 600s but I do think that a modern 400 would be a lovely mid-range for some people.

My girlfriend was 125 for a year, and then went and did the restricted test, and now rides a ZZR250 and whilst they aren't the best bike EVER for handling etc, they are lovely bikes for stepping up and have a bit of kick in them, even at 250. They even cruise comfortably at 95 leprechauns. The new 250Ninjas they have bought out whilst being largely similar to the ZZR250s ARE improved and are getting good reviews as stop gaps. The other interesting thing about these bikes is that they are quite 'large' for a small bike. My girlfriend really likes the presence it has on the road.
