Are Ohlins not well regarded?
We use their race stuff on our GT cars, you'd want it to be good for what they cost.
Ohlins are very well regarded, too. Used as standard on pretty much all expensive road bikes; eg Ducati, Aprilia, Yam R1 (SP) etc.

Yamaha are the majority shareholder IIRC.

yes, some regard the lsl stuff as a bit better for the road though, as its the same as the race stuff.

i know first hand that the ohlins dampers the general public buy are not the same as the ones supplied to race teams.
I totally agree, we buy the stuff then send it back to "our" Ohlins man who then revalves everything to our spec - the public stuff is fairly middle of the road.

ive had ohlins road stuff described as crap on many an occasion, just because it shares the name with the race stuff people think it is the same.

True for rear shocks and forks (where the main difference, assuming the shock body and damper rod are the same size, is the internal valving), but I can't see how they'd bother to do much valving on a steering damper?

There is loads of adjustment even on the 'road' s/damper (32 clicks IIRC) for the most discerning racer....

The quality of the damping is a function of the valve stack being primarily suited to the spring rate, then setup for a given riding style. To say something that's completely rebuildable is 'crap' is ignorant at best.
