It's strange, I'm finding myself regressing in time. My oldest bike is a '78 currently but I'm slowly starting to go older and older. I found an old pic (1940-44) of my Grandad on an AJS 37/12 (1937) Girder forks. This got me looking at the AJS boy racer 7R, Matchless model X and current crush, an Egli Vincent, not to mention unobtainable Broughs which I have always liked!! I have to say the Vincents look stunning in their execution, I always liked the Black Knight models which seem to have come down a lot in price recently though still stratospheric, and there are a couple of almost reasonably priced replica Egli Vincents (Godet/JMC).

On the more modest stuff, there seems to be some lovely old bikes at sensible money, although little MV Disco Volante's and the like still fetch a premium. On Car and Classic there were some lovely old 250-350cc Italian race bikes, some of which went very cheap, I think there was a Benelli Mojave (lovely bike at 4k), a Guzzi (went for a more expensive 10k) and an MV Ipotesi (seemed a bargain for 5k). 2 went for less than I thought and one comparatively for more. Good old auctions, all over the place.
Yeah I'm the same really. I've always been around vintage bikes but got more into modern sports stuff whilst still riding dads classic bikes. Then sold my modern stuff and just rode the classics, and eventually started my own little collection. I now have bikes from the 20s, 30s, 50s and 60s. 1963 is my newest!

I've been fortunate enough to ride a Brough, albeit not the big OHV monster ones. I rode dad's 1938 SS80 which I have to say was incredible. People moan about them saying they're just posh bitsas, but there was something about it which when I was riding it made me 'get' them. Just felt really special somehow. Rode one of the new ones too and have to say that gave the same feeling (until the exhaust fell off).

Similarly I've only ridden single cylinder Vincents not the big glamourous ones. I did quite a lot of miles on a borrowed Series C Comet and they're from the same mold. Just feel special and I will (one day!) get a twin, for sure. They handle quite strangely and kind of 'flop' into corners I found, with their narrow flat bars and unusual forks. Lovely things though.

I'm now in the fortunate position of having a few nice bikes, and an understanding wife! I plan to tick off a few of my always wanted list from when I was a kid. First up I'd always wanted a Triton, but as they're getting a bit hard to register I've settled on an all Norton cafe racer. I have a 1957 Dominator which has the 750 Atlas barrels and top end fitted, which I plan to turn into a proper tarts handbag cafe racer next winter smile

Thanks for sharing that insight into srob life, cool stuff there, nice account of it too. I’m fortunate to have an understanding wife who loves bikes also, in fact she actively encourages me sometimes and she loves the older stuff also!
