Music while riding..
Discussion
Thought id give it a go this morning with my iphone and it was rather pleasent, although needs more volume in the future as i could barely hear it over 30mph.
What headphones are you guys using? i have got a cheap pair of in ear phones, they are ok when the helmet is going on but get caught when i take my helmet off and it feels like they are going to pull my ears off, any suggestions?

We need a FAQ.
If the earphones don't offer any ability to block outside noise then they will need to be louder than the normal noise you get if you don't wear ear plugs. Given that this normal level of noise without ear plugs will damage your hearing over time using normal earplugs can only make this worse.
If you use ear phones that block outside noise without the music on... that is they act as ear plugs as well as earphones then you'll be able to set the music level at a level that won't damage your ears and you'll be able to hear it at higher speeds. If you can't then those headphones are not that effective as earplugs.
I used to use shure e2cs which were ok up to sensible motorway speeds but I've broken then by putting my lid on and off again and eventually the cable broke internally. They lasted a couple of years.
Add to this a load of st about the only music you need is the sound of open pipes or music will distract you and you'll crash and die and you're pretty much there with a thread about listening to music on a bike

Mark

I found them very good and comfy

Seinheiser- not sure of the model, but they were about £40. The company make hearing aids too, & so far they are the best headphones I've ever used.
They do block out alot of outside noise & wind noise- if you pick your ears lots & have reamed out holes the size of your manly digits, 3 sizes of rubber bungs are available to stop them falling out.
They give great bass without distorting.
I only have my MP3 player on very low, which lets me hear the bike over the music.
ETA, but have turned it up to 11 when RATM comes on. It's not good for your life expectancy, as said above, you'll die to death

I also tried it once, I't just felt so wrong to me, I like to hear what the bike is doing, subtle changes in the engine note while it's under load or cranked over were a miss while music was playing.
I like music on when I'm driving the car but can't get away with it while on the bike.

I listen to music when I'm doing long motorway slogs, and have in ear headphone like the ones pictured above. I find they work almost as well as proper earplugs, but they sometimes fall out a bit, e.g. after doing a shoulder check, which is bloody annoying on the motorway. Does anyone have any clever tips on how to keep the bd things in?!

Wear a thin beanie over the earphones under the helmet? Would only work if it's cold out… I have to adjust my ever-so-expensive Ultimate Ears earphones quite often when I'm walking along (if you lose the seal you get naff-all bass and that is rather annoying!) so couldn't imagine being anything other than distracted/annoyed by them on the bike. I'm too much of an audiophile to ride along not being able to hear each note. Triple whine will do for now!

If you want music, buy a goldwing
Wouldn't an ipod be more practical?I did try having music on once and it wasn't really for me but those who want to try, whack some ear plugs in, put your ipod on max then try and line the headphones up with your earplugs and off you go. I think that's the only way to go unless you want to lose your hearing. So that's my musicians point of view for 2p!
