Filtering is one of the best things about having a bike, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside even when it's pissing down

Yes, nothing like a nice relaxing wait in a long queue of traffic while those loose canon filterers rush home for a cup of tea!
I only ride my bikes for pleasure though. I don't commute, I don't rush and most of the bikes I ride are slower than my car (and most others) in a straight line. I tend to pootle around C roads on a Sunday morning, and the only filtering I'd have to do would be past a herd of cows.

I'm perfectly capable of filtering, but it's a bit pointless when the cars only have to overtake me again. Plus waiting in the queue for the train to go past is a good chance to have a look down at the bike, and make sure it's not on fire smile

definitely a confidence thing, and having some measure of imagination of what could go wrong. At 48yo and a biker since may, I am still learning filtering in stationary traffic. Dont like doing it, prefer to bimble along. Some filtering you see is beyond scary - that moped video makes me shudder. I have lost 3 car wing mirrors to that sort of riding in london. Of course they didnt stop...

Nor, by the sound of things, did they fall off, or suffer any adverse consequences. Just do it, you'll enjoy it.

I think anyone who has come from a car to a bike tends to ride in a very car-centric manner, and of course cars don't filter.

I agree when your talking about people who ride occasionally (once a week, if it's dry) for pleasure. Those, like me, who commute on bikes tend to pick up filtering pretty quickly & do it a lot.

Filtering is for noobs, what you need to do is sit inline with cars and wait patiently for that one time Barry in his golf gt tdi doesn't twig you're even there and get severely crushed.

If you don't filter in London then you might as well use public transport.

Does a gs still count as a bike these days?

With the compulsory panniers are they not more the size of a car?

Please surrender your bike licence and man card on the way back to the ghey bar. Unless you're joking, in which case I apologize.

I've now had my licence for 3 months. I find a lot of people at the front of the 'queue' at traffic lights seem to take offence to me having filtered and try pulling away quickly to keep their 'first position'.

I've had it from a Qashqai, Primera, Octavia, various Golfs and a little blat with an R8 that was actually fun. Surprisingly no BMWs or Audis. You can tell they're going to do it as well, they always edge forward on the clutch whilst it's still on red.

Haven't had a problem filtering other than that. People do actually know how to use their mirrors and often move over towards the kerb a little bit to give me a little more room in a long queue. Always give a thumbs up to those people.

I suspect your positioning is not ideal. It almost never happens to me.

Just do not be slow when the lights change and nobody should get bothered.

Some tips would be handy then. I don't want to go over the white line on a red, setting off a camera so the front tyre is usually dead on it and I'll be in between the lanes if that makes sense. Loads of room between me and the cars either side of me where this has happened a couple of times being a very large roundabout with lights on and 4 lanes.

It does only take a couple seconds to be past those that edge and boot it, but I tend to ride in a relaxing manner, so I suppose I've just noticed that more than others would on more powerful bikes.

I'll have a reasses of my positioning next time I'm out and set off sharper from the lights smile

I either pull infront of the lead vehicles, which may mean going past the stop line, which is not legal -OR- I accept being second off at the lights and stop behind the rear end of the lead vehicles. I don't like stopping level with the front of the lead vehicles in a little gap. That just creates confusion about your intent.
