just bought a 1996 camar z28, i have straight through exhaust system from the manifolds, and performance air intake, thing is that i can really smell the exhaust fumes on my clothes just by going round the back of the car a few times while ticking over in my drive, is this running rich or what is rich meant to smell like? petrol maybe? this is more like a dry exhaust smell if that makes any sense

I bet it has no catalytic converter or emissions gear in it. Could be rich too but points 1 and 2 are your 'smoking guns'

Emissions gear missing would not matter. But if no CATS, then yes it might smell different. TBH, I've always had at least one car old enough not to have CATs, so sort of forget most people in the UK are unaccustomed to it these days... or at least it seems that way.

As for running rich, most likely. The stock tune on them is fairly rich like most car, esp of that era. A few breathing mods will probably only make it worse. Probably not an issue though and unless you have reason to worry about it, I really wouldn't. smile

Any pics??

Does it pass the MOT without cats? If so, I wouldn't worry about it.
The 96 has the LT1 engine and they can sometimes burn a bit of oil so check it's not overfilled and if it's an auto, check the tranny fluid.

Hi people, well the car has a misfire , real lumpy under load and only when it has warmed up, this would upset the balance i suppose and give me a worse smell than usual coming from the back, i really hope its not the optispark, ive not had the car long didnt notice when i took it for a test drive but since then it has got alittle worse and the engine light will only now flash for a few seconds then go off and may not see it again until many miles of driving, plugs changed 18 months ago and hope ALL were changed!!

Optispark is a common issue.

I had mine replaced. Yours is vented, so better than the earlier ones.

You can get upgrades which are better. Also check leads etc. Otherwise just get a new opti, its not a major issue to replace.

You can also convert to LS1 coils...
