I decided to start stripping of the suspension because the bushes were worn and the ball joints knocking, but only one side at a time.
Monday the wishbones came back from grit blasting spent 4 days coating them with paint (tight b*****d me) I decided to put every thing back this evening, ready to start the other side, ha what a joke.
I brought the polybushes for the Chim from a well known supplier 3 months ago ready to do the job, today I found that the bottom pin with the top hat washer (for the spot weld) are 16.5mm dia, where as all the other pins are 16mm, hence it does not fit in to the bush.
Plus to make matter worse the bolts in the bolt kit are not 8.8 HT they are some other make maybe from China ‘whan fook ming type’.. It seems that now a days you have to check everything, what happened to ‘do it right first time’ and quality control, no wonder every thing is going to China. - Sorry one pissed off TVR owner, rant over…

Has anyone else had the same problems with these polybushes, or I am just an unlucky b*****d, I did tried to phone the supplier but he has gone for the weekend?

Ok Guys, I have to eat some humble pie.

The ‘supplier’ has just called me to say that he will check stock and send the correct bushes in the post first class, it seems that 16mm is correct..
At least some of my faith in ‘customer service’ has been restored :-)

Sliconekid, it is Daz yes? You are right, on all accounts I do not name people, there is to much finger pointing already in the world. Did you get sorted out for the rear wheel bearings; I got mine from Burton Power (Essex I believe), great bunch of guys?

Yes i managed to get some quality bearings not like the cheap Chinese ones i fitted. The yellow stuff pads are going on the rears to match the front and the next job is to remove the Chinese power steering pump which lasted just over a year.Im seriously thinking about a roll bar but don`t know what my options are. Those track days are addictive ..i keep dreaming about it every night..laugh

Hi Daz,

You dream about it every night, eek don’t tell the other half or you will be sleeping the garage…

Yep track days are additive, I raced a Bowler off road most weekends and that was additive for the brain but cruel for the body it is amazing what rough ground can do to the dics in your spine, but what a thrill… woohoo

Never done a track day or driven on a race circuit, (go-karts yes). Did know a guy who was responsible for all the temporary electrical works for the F1 teams, but F1 has never interested me hence I never took the offer to visit on race days, 'i know stupid'..
There a couple of tracks here in France mainly in the north or the south and it is not cheap, plus you have to be a member of a club, pay high prices etc.rolleyes

So thanks Daz for making me feel home sick for motorsport – weeping suppose I will have to move back to the UK for this passion, but things are not too ‘Great’ in Britain at the moment for jobs, we will see, enjoy your weekend Daz.

If you go for a roll bar Daz, do a bit of homework.

There is only one at the mo that is high enough to give good protection for a tall-average driver.

As to good quality bearings etc, I have renewed every bush, bearing, swivel, track rod end and CV etc on the car and after 30 + T/D's have never had any wear.

Fit the best and forget!

If they had 8.8 on them I would be very surprised indeed... 8.8 refers to metric sizes only.

The bolt kits are UNF which use different markings and standards. The bolts supplied are SAE Grade 5 (3 lines at 120 degrees) which has the same strength specs as metric 8.8 as it happens.

If the originals you took off were marked as 8.8 then someone has fitted the WRONG bolts to the suspension. While some metric and UNF bolts are a close fit they are not interchangeable.

As for the supply chain... the bolts are sourced from a US manufacturer as they are about the only people that make them now. To be more accurate they were, as they switched the production to China several years ago simply because of cost. To be honest, it is getting increasingly difficult to get these bolts as the world has switched to metric.

OK ! seems I am in for a ‘wrist slapping’ frown

While being p*** off last night, I decided to get on my soapbox to vent some of my rage on to PHs about the bolts, having engaged my mouth before brain it seems that in the cold light of day I WAS WRONG about the bolts. I have been fully corrected on this matter by Steve, bow so here it is :-

Steve very sorry for complaining before speaking with you, thanks for sending the right bushes express post..

In my defense I had planned a weekend away with friends with the TVR,driving I was looking forward to it but had to scrap the plans for me weeping plus I had to pay a cancellation charge to the hotel readit so hence the ‘mouth before brain’… getmecoat

What's up with Chinese stuff anyway???? You get loads of fasteners here (UK) "made in Italy" which is just as poor quality TBH.

Which roll bar is that?looking on the intenet i found Woodys TVR roll bar instalation..It looks a big job, where does the bottom part fit to the floor..I was told only the laters cars have anchor points..Once fitted do you have to loose the standard seat belts for road use..would be nice to have both beacause the harness looks uncomfortable..

Sorry guy, O/T.

TR Lane's is the highest.

Bolts through shelf behind into lugs on the chassis and bolts to seat belt mounting points.

I use normal belts for road use and 4 pointer for T/D's.

Check what mounts you have with Tim Lane.

That's my car in the pics from about 3 years ago.

Which one is the best to go for, hoop type or the one you have fitted..Looks like a swine to remove the centre consul when the roll bar is fitted but it does look better..The hoop style one restricts leg room and your looks like you could bang your head in a accident..

The hoop style is next to useless!

It finishes about 9" lower then mine.

Yes, your head is near the bar, hence the padding material but during T/D's you will have a helmet on.

You can remove the centre counsul no problem.

Mine is a Hoop-ish design and far from useless - two intersecting loops therefore giving excellent cross bracing across the car as well as maximum height above the drivers head (the hoop sits about 5mm below the inside of the roof hoop.

It also uses the bottom rear body mount and the seatbelt mounting hole to bolt through therefore you can retain the standard steatbelt mounts too. Its a custom build by a friend however so not commercially available.

Edited to add - Yes that TR Lane hoopy one looks a bit yikes

Cheers,
Matt.

Can you get any more made up..Ive been offered a new TR lane type but the more i look at it the more it puts me off,the bar is very close to the side and top of your head, perfect when wearing a helmet but would give me a enclosed feeling.Would be nice to get one the same as yours, all kept behind the seats. How much leg room do you loose,it does not concern me because my seat is quite far forward but my son is 5FT 11"..and there is not to much room at the moment.
