Hi guys,

I know a few people have been asking about driving lamps so i thought i'd post some pics of what i did to mine over the weekend. I'm half way through but am going to mount some smaller smoked indicators below the lamps i've put in and then mount them both in mesh.

I personally think they actually fit quite well. Thoughts ?

I think it looks good.

I will try some sort of mod like this later in the year.

I have Lupo lights that are an improvement but a little more long range lighting must be good.

I returned late last night from Cornwall in a hired Transit, jeez the lights are awesome, it's amazing how lights have improved over the years!

Haven't actually tried them yet, but in fairness the lights on there aren't toooo bad. Whatever the blue lenses are that got put in are definitely better than the standard ones. They are better than the standard lights on my Mx5 anyway. I did read about the Lupo conversion, sounds like a lot of stress though and don't really fancy cutting into bodywork, as i think that's what you have to do, or maybe i'm thinking of something else ?

I think it actually makes it look a bit more modern as well, no big orange repeaters on the front. As an example of the cowboy nature of the prvious owner when i took out the mesh holding the light i found a roll of masking tape which had obviously been used to wedge behind the light to stop it from falling backwards whilst it was being glue in place...... yikes I've come across many "mods" like this whilst dismantling and putting back together ! ha

Interesting - which lamps did you get, AJ?

Nice Ron,

That was the other option for me, looks good like that, even if it is making it look more like a Grif ! ha.

Don't you find that that arrangement drops the airflow through the front grille too much - there's not that much grille left now! biggrin

Have to say I think that looks really good! What lamps did you use? What are you going to use for indicators?

Cheers Phil,

Think it matches the blue headlights nicely as well. They're ring sports blue lamps, literally could be a better fit, it was really lucky. For the indicators i'm not sure yet, i guess it doesn't matter too much as i'm going have them black so you won't see them until they flash anyway. I could use the lenses i've just taken off the side repeaters (as they're being changed to clears) and mount them in some mesh and still use the original bulb behind it. We'll see what happens when i get round to that. Lots of other bits to crack on with in the meantime. Will update more when i finish them, possibly this weekend.

They really do look good - will there be any MOT issues with small front indicators - sorry to be negative but I always seem to get MOT problems

I might have a go myself if it works out OK

did you work through the front grill or have you cut access panels in the wheel arches?

good work though !!

Cheers Steve,

Can't imagine there'll be any issues. As long as they are visible when they're flashing then i'd say that'd go through an MOT fine. We'll soon see i guess, ha. Got a year, near enough, to wait till the next MOT anyway.

I worked through the front grill much simpler that way, still a bit of a faff though! I'm definitely not up for cutting holes to be able to get to things though.

Going to get some mesh this weekend and try and get to work, will update once i get it all done.

Seriously considering this mod !!
How are the lamps actually held into the mesh ?
Where did you get them
and how do you get blue tinted headlights ?
Cheers

Steve,

The lamps aren't actually mounted in the mesh, they're mounted on a bracket that comes from the fibreglass (or will be). Plan is to then mount the indicator lens into the mesh and cut a hole to fit round the lamp, then glue round the edge through the grill hole ... going to be fiddly.

As for the blue lights, i have absolutely no idea where the blue headlamps came from. They were on the car when i bought it. The Spots are ring sports blue though. £7 on fleabay !!

Hope that helps.

Hi Phil. I'd say no to that question, new ETB temp gauge sits just a tad over 80 deg even in traffic. The driving lamps aren't that big really, but they do improve things when driving at night.

Cheers Bud.

I think they look great Ron. That's where i was thinking about putting mine as well. I suppose if you did have any issues with cooling you could just move the number plate to where i have mine anyway...but you don't...so not to worry. ha.
