I've got 205/55 r15 fronts and 245/45 r16 rears. Rears have 4.5mm less diameter than originals(225/50 r16) going by the 'Steve Heaths Bible' bow, which at 90mph should be less than 1mph difference. Been toying with the idea of a proper Gps Speedo as additional to the standard, but not many reviews on them. Speedhut does one on ebay at just over 190 quid from the states, and there are several UK based products also. It would probably be cheaper to renew my geriatric phone paperbag so I can use an app as suggested by Debaron. I just hate change and having to learn tech stuff confused
Remember that GPS based speedos don't respond quickly - their refresh rate is once every couple of seconds at best so although they're OK for, say, motorway use they aren't any use at all for when you're pulling out of junctions etc.

Odd - my Road Angel says dead on 90 at an indicated 3,000 rpm...

(That's a '94 4.0HC with T5 box...)

Phil
I'm about here too if SatNav is to be believed. '96 400, T5 box but no flashy HC
Checked this again yesterday - 3,000rpm is dead on 90 according to both my standalone Road Angel and TomTom on the iPhone.

(My speedo at 3,000 rpm on the other hand shows anywhere between 75 and 110! biggrin )

I did wonder how fast they update, the speedhut gps has a 5hz processor while a DS200 by digital speedo's uk has a 10hz read, I haven't got a clue what difference that makes in real time scratchchin. Speedhut's has a 0-60 feature as well, but whether it's accurate shootbounce who knows?

saving a fortune in petrol.
Hi Daz, drove the car for the first time this year and once I had escape the 2 hour jam on the M25 and could get it up to speed I checked the revs for you.

80 is 2350 rpm.

Did forget to ask what the box was and who built it though. Sorry.

Not sure what boxes the T cars have but there's no reason why a longer 5th can't be put in any box.

The std ratios in the boxes probably date back decades and are a best fit solution for a range of engines, all of which have less torque than the Tivs and in cars with more weight.

Hi folks, I've found the answer to my question, courtesy of a new GPS digital speedo.
3500rpm produces 104 mph while standard speedo says 80 mph yikes, that's why the roof rattled laugh a tad, but having both windows open a few inches seems to cure that.
Sorry about delay in producing an answer, took me a while to fit GPS speedo neatly and then it rained and rained, what a wonderful summer it's been.

Hi Phil, I went for a DS200 from Digital Speedos, it's seems fairly accurate when testing in my Volvo and updates within a second or so. Couple of downsides are :
1:It only comes with a cigar lighter fitment which is way to short to be of use(18 inches approx), and if you remove it I assume I will invalidate any buyers warranty.
Because the chim's socket is in the door I chopped a couple wires in to the circuit under dash and fitted a second socket on the tunnel just below middle of dash. This is where I mounted it with it's own switch so as not to drain battery, not an ideal position I know, but I can see it between handbrake and gear stick (good for a glance now and then).
2:Also the wire on the back is very close to the top of the unit and the two connectors GPS and 12v are quite bulky and and wired close together so you have to make quite a large hole to get them through. smash
3:Instructions are a little vague and I think converted from Italian. read
That said it does work well, it has a auto light sensor, a speed warning feature that flashes a small red light and it's a damn sight more accurate than the original, but bang goes my excuse if I get pulled for speeding.cop

So - 3,500rpm = 104mph.

Therefore 500rpm = 15mph.

So 3,000rpm = 90mph ... so Mark., ChimpOfDeliciousness and myself were all pretty much on the button then. biggrin

Indeed it does.thumbup
If I recall correctly (it was around 0430am)coffee, I was reading roughly 90mph at 3000rpm but this was only for a few seconds as I wanted to check 3500rpm results. It just amazed me how far out the standard speedo was, it seems fairly close at sub 60 mph speeds, but 70 upwards, it as if the needle hits a wall.

Na, it adds character, just get something else to read your speed by.
It's probably cheaper as well. More money for fuel. hehe

I find it's handy for scaring teh sh*t out of our American colleagues when they come over here ...

...I take 'em out for a curry and they see what appears to be me passing police cars at 100mph and think I'm an outlaw! biggrin

The last one I took out for a curry glanced over at the speedo then shot me a concerned look. Suddenly he relaxed and said "I was getting worried there but I just realised that you guys work in kilometers don't you?"

"Nope..."

The following morning I had a voicemail saying "Sounds like you took Charlie out last night and scared the sh*t out of him ... he says you were doing 150 at one point."

Haven't told any of them in the US office that it's just the speedo over / under reads wildly. biggrin
