Can someone give me an estimate of speed at 3500rpm. Mines reading 80mph! (on the track of course) whistle in 5th. T5 gearbox '94' 430. It feels a tad quicker especially when roof starts to rattle eek cheers chaps.

Probably a useless answer, but my 99 4.0 with a T5 box is doing 80 at about 3000 rpm, so would be just over 90 at 3500.

Mine would be 87mph at 3500 revs, if the speedo can be believed it does 25mph /1000revs in 5th. T5 'box in a '97 500.

Odd - my Road Angel says dead on 90 at an indicated 3,000 rpm...

(That's a '94 4.0HC with T5 box...)

In theory they are 27mph per 1000 rpm in top.

So 3000 is 80 and 3500 would be approaching 95.

Don't forget about any variations with different ratios in the diff

Same for me. 98 4.0. Somewhere close to 3000 rpm at 80mph.

I must be missing something obvious but that would imply 160mph at 6000rpm and a bit higher at a max 6250 rpm
yet the quoted max speeds are usually around 156/157 mph.

Mark.

I'm about here too if SatNav is to be believed. '96 400, T5 box but no flashy HC

That's close where I'm at with my T5 equipped 4.0 litre HC.

I see between 3100 & 3200rpm at a steady TomTom confirmed 80mph.

Of course they both could be wrong but my speedo is pretty close to the TomTom, it over reads by just 2% up to 80 then follows the sat nav speed very closely from there on.

Playing with my mate in his Top Cats LS Cerbera I saw 146 leptons on the speedo which was displayed as 148 leptons on the TomTom.

She felt like she had more to give , however the cost of underwear laundry bills had me backing off at that point yikes

Thanks for info everyone, as suspected, it looks like my speedo is roughly 15% out. I'll have to watch that with the speed cameras, that's if I haven't already been caught.angel

If you have an iPhone, Speedo App is free and is pretty accurate. Of course you'll have to get a passenger to operate it - on a private road... whistle

ETA - not as a replacement for the actual speedo - just to check how 'out; it is.

Over the hill, I think wind may be your problem........the average Chimp is not exactly the slipperiest shape in the world, and all that wind hitting the front end dents your top speed.

Well I'm picking up my first Chimaera next week but now wondering if I'm doing the right thing,, after reading the previous comments I put my KIA SORENTO 2.5 diesel to the test,3000 rpm, 85+ mph,(on that very same track)and whats more it liked it. It can pull away like that proverbial bat,Ok it's not got that top end speed, but on our roads where can you drive that fast. (still getting the Chim though just to prove myself wrong)

3100 RPM at 80mph is rediculous ! The V8 torque would easily do 80mph at 2000rpm.

It`s Obvious the 5th gear is not high enough..

6 speed box ,or different ratios in the 5 speed box would help.

The problem with changing the ratios in the diff is you may loose the thrill of acceleration..

When we were fitting the new box to my car I did specify a longer fifth.

It's a gear that's only used for cruising and generally on the motorway.

I can't recall the ratio but 80 is now about 2200 rpm.

I've got 205/55 r15 fronts and 245/45 r16 rears. Rears have 4.5mm less diameter than originals(225/50 r16) going by the 'Steve Heaths Bible' bow, which at 90mph should be less than 1mph difference. Been toying with the idea of a proper Gps Speedo as additional to the standard, but not many reviews on them. Speedhut does one on ebay at just over 190 quid from the states, and there are several UK based products also. It would probably be cheaper to renew my geriatric phone paperbag so I can use an app as suggested by Debaron. I just hate change and having to learn tech stuff confused

Who built you gear box ? are the first 4 gears the same and only the fith higher..

My emgine would cruise at around 2000 rpm at 80mph .
saving a fortune in petrol.

I couldn't find the picture of it that I have. I can't recal the model spec.

It's a standard Tiv box with uprated internals. All gear ratios are the same as standard but 5th is effectively 6th.
