I have been quoted £2,500.00 (£1,250.00) per side to have my outriggers replaced. Is this steap?

I know some of you guys have had a body off chassis restoration. Could you advise of any decent places in or around the West Sussex area to have this done? And at roughtly what cost.

'kin hell.

that would almost buy you a new chassis.

i dont know who down south, but for the cost of a trailer for the day (if its not driveable), take it to sportmotive who would do it for around half that.

Car is drivable. Taxed, Insured and MOT'd.

I took it to a TVR specialist today to see what they would offer and they told me the outriggers will need doing and quoted me £2,500.00.

The offer they gave me for the Chim was so low it was a joke.

For an extra £500 over what you have been quoted Willow Sports Cars in Newark will do a full body off chassis refurb, ie replace out riggers and full powder coat of chassis and suspension. Replacement bushes and any other work needed is extra, but having taken it to bits they will have to re-assemble anyway so you only end up paying for the cost of parts needed, no additional fitting cost, if you see what I mean. If its a keeper then this is probably a good option. I think that they have an open day soon, but it may be tomorrow, so a bit short notice.

sportmotive. Job done. Its worth the drive. Just had mine done and also a full chassis clean down and repaint. Proper job and you'll get the whole thing done for around the price you've been quoted for one side.

roflroflrofl Phuck me, I can feel a career change coming on. Last time I did a set (on a Wedge, admittedly) I charged the guy £250... and I held my breath afterwards, he was a big lad biggrin

There's about £100 in materials in that job. Even if it took a fortnight that's still £30 an hour for labour. I bet the MIG-monkeys aren't on a third of that.

As a guide, I paid about £3,600 total for a complete rebuild, outriggers replaced, chassis stripped, blasted, zinc primered and powder coated. That price also included various other stuff: recored rad, valley gasket, fuel pump, fuel lines, and numerous other things. This was a huge amount more work than would be required just to replace the outriggers. It was done by Willow in Newark: highly recommended, if a little far away. Give Nick a call for advice; he's a very helpful fellow and you may end up deciding to take it up there anyway.

The price you've been quoted is far too much for just lifting the body and replacing the outriggers.

Edited to add: I forgot, the price I quoted also included Nick's modifications to the chassis to strengthen the seat mountings, so they're now bolted to metalwork rather than just bolted to the GRP. He did an enormous amount of work in that price!

Some TVR specialists quote over £80/hour, so the high price is not that surprising.
In 1999, I was charged £65/hour by the dealer I purchased my car from.

That it can be done cheaper than the quote he has, there is no doubt.

garage pricing....think of a number sometimes

ive a local chap i use for my cars (when i dont do it myself). charges 35 an hour rebuilt my wifes engine (shells, timing chains, lifters, coupke rockers etc), for 600 including the parts

last time he was busy, so i sent it elsewhere. got charged 100 an hour for a 1 hour job, plus 35 for a diagnostic assessment, which took 5 mins. and this is rural shropshire. told the chap he was having a phukin larf....

i will be amazed if you spemd more than 1500 getting that job done

It's a long way for you to North Yorkshire but it would be worth it to visit Steve at SDAutotec . I had a full chassis refurb with engine out and new cam, cam belt, clutch etc. It looks beautiful and drives like new again. Ready for the next 13 years of fun only this time hoping for 20+ as the new outriggers are thicker walled than the originals

It would seem "down south" are full of rip off merchants.

I'm waiting on a local company to respond with a quote and if that fails then it would seem a road trip to the North is on the cards.

As always thanks for all your help Ladies & Gents.

Happy motoring to you all......

I have seen, first hand the work these guys do, and they are only down the road from you. They currently have 3 Tiv Chassis in at the moment, check out there facebook work blogs on there website for photos of before and after.
They can take your car in and let you pay in stage payments over 3 or 4 months if that helps with your finances?

You might have to wait a bit before taking it into these guys as my chim is going in to them in two weeks. Incredible work they do though, and really nice guys. I went to see them a fue months ago, told the gf I'd only be 20 minutes, came out two hours later.

You could try APM TVR in Hampshire, Andys a great guy and knows his stuff.

£1500 should be enough with partial body lift. Suggest getting them galvanised before fitting. No more rot ever.

I didn't realise he was holding another open day. Sadly once again it's on a day I can't manage, as its my wife's birthday this weekend. I must ask him when he's planning the next one though - its a helluva long way, but Lincoln is close by and makes a lovely overnight stop for a weekend break.

Give Nick my best regards - it's been two years since my chassis job now but he might still remember me (by my real name David Williams).
