Today I started to tidy up the engine bay wiring and noticed that the offside steering rack gater was broken at the end(closest to the wheel) and oil was leaking out. Would the leaking oil be due to the broken gater or is there a bigger problem here.

Hello

you must check the oil seal ring behind the gaters and the steering box also to check for mechanicals defects too. Mostly you have to remove the rack and send
to repair

You have a bigger problem with one of the end seals as Vaurien mentioned, thats ideally a rack out repair & not really DIY but steering rack reconditioners, the gaiters are just to keep the internals clean & dry.

After reading some past posts on this I called Kiley in Birmingham who have quoted me £225 plus vat to recon the rack. All I need to do now is remove it......

Keep away from the larger companys who do it on a production line ! Im not going to give the company name but its well known something direct .

We removed and re fitted the rack 4 times ,each time the gaitor filled with hydrolic fluid .

I then sent it to Western power steering ( they arrange pick up)

They found damage caused by the other company and seals left in they could not remove ...So be carefull.

One man does the whole job from start to finish so more care and attention has been put in to the job .

I will give Western a call tomorrow and try to compare but it does seem to be a bit of a lottery.

My steering rack died this week putting all the fluid in to the gaitors. Is that how gaitors is spelt.
Brian Hosfield at the old Factory is doing the refurbish. The seals are hard to buy now, maybe its something we all need to get together and do a group buy.

It is worrying to hear that steering rack parts are becoming hard to find or even no longer available. There doesn't seem to be much alternatives for full replacements either. I'm hoping my issue is not beyond repair.

Looking at the picture there does not seem alot in the rack ,im sure parts could be machined.

Like |Greger said he can machine the parts..

Indeed, there isn't a lot of parts in there.
But the ones that fail i.e. the gaskets, do you know where we can get them from?
I guess, if your rack is in bits and pieces, you must already be investigating for parts replacement, right? smile

Racetech sells this gasket kit for PAS steering rack: http://www.racetechdirect.co.uk/tvr-car-parts-subs...

Does anybody have any experience with the disassembly and replacement of the internals?

Sorry I made a mistake "e635815" to answer the incoming email without to respect from which sender it was coming !

Certainly my answer comes back today from "pistonheads". My fault....

OK..you know that I´m a foreigner....and english is not my mother tongue.... so by the rack looks like is a seal- problem which resulted from incision and erosion of the rack ?! I understand it right ? You have any diagonostic
discribtion and/or picture of this problematic section ?

The rack is now out of the car (pfou!!!! it's tight down under!) and I am planing on buying this gasket kit. So if anybody here has some experience with dismantling a rack, please it is the right moment to post. beer

That's my baby....The hydraulic fluid has a brownish color instead of the usual red. I have mixed two different types of liquids and this must be the result.
It was a real bd to remove due the stearing UJ being corroded tight together. Will put large quantities of copper grease and protection around for next time.

Took the opportunity to clean the steering arms as well and will paint them to avoid further corrosion.

I found Kiley Clinton to be better than Western, mine leaked within an hour of coming back from Western rolleyes

I think it's roger at Kiley who did his apprenticeship at Burman, Nuffield said smile

Good thing about Kiley is they'll tell you if it's beyond effective repair based on current stock.

We need a remanufacture of racks and pinions.
