I am looking at replacing all the carpets in my 96 Chimaera and have received a quote of £600 for fitting which I think is rather steep. I can get the carpets for between £350 & £400 depending on quality which I am OK with but as I don't have the time to fit them I will have to pay. Can anyone recommend anyone who will either fit the carpets or supply and fit at a reasonable price. I live in East Yorkshire but can deliver the car and leave it for a week or so if it's within a sensible distance. HELP PLEASE.

I was selling up due to being over the retirement age but wifey persuaded me to keep the car, plus staying on at work helps pay the bills so the car will get the treatment it deserves.

Do you have "dave the trimmers" phone number and location?

600 sounds reasonable assuming it is a full set piped etc. The labour is not inconsiderable.

I have had quotes (more or less) locally from a couple of reputable trimmers, for a quality 'as original' full carpet replacement, supplied and fitted; 850 and 900 respectively.

Dave the Trimmer's price looks very enticing, and he seems to be popular enough, but in my case the drive to and from would swallow a fair chunk of the difference, and if there were any issues... it's a longish drive again.

I always think you have to take these things on balance.

So 350-400 for carpets, and 600 fitting seems only a little over the odds based upon the quotes I've had.
I'm sure I said this somewhere else recently, but I remember TVR quoting me £900 supply only, back around 2001/2002.

I'll be doing the carpets myself over winter - £210 (think I got lucky with that price) for the carpets from Central TVR and maybe £50 for glue/cleaner/stanley blades etc.
Looking forward to the DIY challenge, should be fun and satisfying....assuming it all turns out OK of course laugh
Also re-colouring the interior and replacing the dash myself - the £1000's that would've been spent at a trimmers will go toward Nitrons/brakes/engine instead biggrin

The costs were £450 for the carpets and £600 for fitting, plus carriage for the carpets and glue etc. All this plus VAT so it would work out at approx £1400 which is rather steep. The current carpets aren't too bad it was just a change of colour from black to deep burgundy which would have highlighted the seal grey leather seats and new walnut veneered dash. It's not a case of having to have them changed cos they're badly worn, more a case of enhancing the interior so £1400 is a lot of money for something basically not required.
Does anyone know of a fitter in the yorkshire area as both Milton Keynes & Blackpool are a 3-4hr drive from where I live.

Sorry I can't recommend anyone for your area, but I agree with you, £1400 totalled up is more than you should need to spend. Nearer the 1k mark including David and Nick's bit would be closer to reasonable.

Have you tried the local TVR Car Club chapter? TVRCC Chapters

£1k?
WAY to much.
I bought a set from Coverdale for about £350, then a couple hundred labour to fit

I think mine where couple for fitting, maybe slightly more but thinking about it I had already stripped out the old carpet, it was part of a few different bits of work but by far the best value even if you factor in a B+B for the night in Blackpool. Trim Technician at Blackpool.
It will save you money by stripping out the old carpet and it's really simple if you like that sort of thing. Plus you don't have to be careful or neat as it's being scrapped anyway.
Four bolts on each seat and they lift straight out, centre console is one screw on mine and it lifts up, then just pull and cut the old carpet out. This takes a few hours so you would be charged half or full days labour by someone for this.

I love how so many people think this is an hour or so's work!

Fernhurst did mine (as part of the sale price) and it was well over a day of work to strip the car and fir the new set.

Sorry but if you want a good job doing, then pay someone a fair price to do it properly.

I agree it's difficult which is why I decided to not do it myself, but 500-600 for a days labour? Surely not?

There is a big difference between the price of Cloverdale synthetic (£343) and 100% wool (£544) carpets.

So I would say, as I was quoted on wool myself; that with £550 for carpets, that leaves the labour at £300-£350 by the trimmers that quoted me.

Even for 'down south' prices, that starts to look fairly competitive.

It should also give a clue as to what you should actually be paying for the fitting...

I think brett84's suggestion of doing the strip out yourself has to be a good one (time allowing).
Not much a person can get wrong with that job, and it's bound to save some pennies. It's something I hadn't considered myself, so thanks thumbup

In the end though, I agree with edo; pay the right price for the right job.

To the OP; doing simple arithmetic as above, it still backs your belief that £600 for fitting is far too high.
