Rollcage options.
Discussion
Ah, that old question.
If you are going to do track days, in my opinion it is desirable to have a roll bar fitted.
Others will not agree and there are arguments for and against.
I have a 4 bolt fixing roll bar made by TR Lane and it will give you the best headroom of the few available.
A full cage is available but is really for racing and you won't get the roof on iirc.

I'm getting into my Chim... Can't help but feel helpless in a crash senario.
Who does a good cage and idea of costs 4/6/8 point, just what's involved etc would be nice to see pics of install and various options, side protection etc. Suppose a roll hoop helps abit.
You can get a bespoke rollbar - this is the build H.M.S is doing for me which includes a customer rollbar that is tall, but still fits within roof. http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f...Who does a good cage and idea of costs 4/6/8 point, just what's involved etc would be nice to see pics of install and various options, side protection etc. Suppose a roll hoop helps abit.
It is setup for a 4 point, it is also designed so it fits into standard points on chassis. Once it is finished will be powder coated, and have the top parts of the hoops covered in some soft material.

I can't get the link to work!
Who is HMS?
Just look for the 'johns tvr rebuild' thread. It is the name of his company, full disclosure he is my Dad - he has been rebuilding me a car for last 7 Months. But will soon finish (I hope!) and will start taking on other TVR work, unless I can think of another crazy project. Who is HMS?
Hi Alun - my Griff has the Sportmotive roll hoop, really solid bit of kit, picks up on the proper mounting points on the chassis. A lot of thought must have gone into the design - it doesn't interfere with the roof but the top bar sits above and slightly behind the headrests so if you flipped over and didn't have time to duck you'd have half a chance

I have been looking into this myself. i have got a few photos of them
Picture 3 is an early TR Lane bar and is completely useless unless you are four feet tall!Edited by TUS4CHIM on Monday 21st January 01:36
Picture four is my car with the revised TR Lane bar made especially which is the tallest you can get.

The cage in that last pic looks too far forward for me.Picture four is my car with the revised TR Lane bar made especially which is the tallest you can get.
Too close to your head in an impact. Ive got to rollcentre one in mine behind the seats.
A full cage in a road car is going to do you more damage unless you always wear a lid.
Ive clonked my helmet on the tuscans cage plenty of times and that would hurt without the lid

That picture was taken by TR Lane prior to me picking the car up!
I padded mine also and then again.... 2 layers.
I even put some padding on the passenger side
I want to look into extending mine with a bolt in section to the front also.
When i had the outriggers done i had extra threaded bossed welded in to fit to.
A side impact bar would be a nice addition also if it wasnt too intrusive

My Griff had the TR Lane hoop (pic 3) when I bought it, I've since removed and sold it. It restricts the seat movement (which isn't great anyway), I'm only 5' 7" but I still found I couldn't get the seat as far back or recline it as much as I'd like. My car isn't fitted with harnesses and without these I'm not convinced the hoop offers that much benefit. The final issue I had is that the hoop bolts into the rear outrigger corner plates, even if these are in immaculate condition (which most aren't), they're not exactly the strongest part of the chassis. In my case I use the car mainly for touring, I've no intention of taking it on a track, hence the decission to remove the roll hoop. The later TR Lane hoop looks as though it overcomes the seat movement issues, if you're thinking of fitting one I'd suggest also budgeting for harnesses and some chassis strengthening.
I will try to get some pics of mine sometime soon - its similar to the TR Lane one but set a few inches further back so its just behind the headrests. Less chance of banging your head with it set a bit further back.
Setting it back does result in it getting a bit wedged in by the screw head sticking out of the centre of the roof bar hinge. On mine this scratches the paint so I will need to keep touching it up. If it was further forward this problem would go away but then the bar is by the side of your head.
There must be some kind of middle ground between all the different designs that people have that gives the right headroom, isnt too close to your head (either above or to the side) and doesnt compromise somethign else (like the roof hoop centre screw).
ETA: The only pic I have of mine, but you can see the passenger seat is as far back as it goes and the bar is still just behind it.
