Alun, it's not a race, its about having fun in your car, observing the rules to make it safe, and using it as a test session to get used to your car nearer the limits and establish what needs doing to your car. Assuming the suspension joints are all ok and would pass an MOT, have you have a full four wheel alignment (toe, cast, camber) recently?
When I first got Niggles, he didn't handle, felt like he was going to spit me off the road all the time. Three of the four wheels were well out of alignment, and after the work was done (60 + VAT), he was a different car.
