Cam marking reads

KCTVR435RM11611932X

Also 8124 which may be a serial number.

Is there a way of finding out what cam it is?

KCTVR435

KC-TVR-435

KC = Kent Cams

TVR = TVR

435 = Profile as fitted to 5.0 litre or 4.0HC Chims & Griffs

thanks for the info, was that a factory fitted cam or a upgrade from the original?

The 435 was standard fitment to all 5.0 litre Chims & Griffs.

The 435 was also standard fitment to the £1000 HC upgrade option offered on 4.0 litre Chims.

Like all the profiles it's just a grind on the standard blank, and some might say a grind too far.

There is evidence to suggest the amount of machining required to create the 435 actually breeched the case hardening of the lobes.

This, and the rather poor quality induction hardened followers used at the time conspired to mean the 435 gave a very short service life.

There are much better cams & followers available these days, but some that are equally as bad.

I had Rob from V8 Developments replace my 435 cam in my 4.0HC with his Stealth profile.

I believe the cam comes from Piper Cams, well it came in a new Piper box, which was fine by me as Piper have been around for donkey's years & have always had an excellent reputation.

I'm guessing Piper grind their own blank to Rob's specified profile, I know they offer this service.

The cam change included good quality followers & a JP timing gear set.

While my 30,000 mile 435 wasn't anywhere near as badly worn as some you see, even at this low mileage a number of lobes were on the way out & one was very bad.

Equally the original followers that came out were quite badly dished.

The cam, followers, JP timing gear set & Rob's skill in ensuring the cam timing was set perfectly gave excellent results.

The car was transformed, immediately feeling more powerful and eager to rev, exhaust note sounded better too.

Highly recommended thumbup

I am in the process of having the cam and other bits replaced by a power 885 cam ( after much research). I'm guessing that the am I'm replacing couldn't have done over 100k miles. When I get some pictures of it I'll post them up.

Thanks for the info.

My 435 at 45K was in good condition and some have done close to 90K with no problems smile

I like my 435.. lots of low down wheel spins.. but fell off at the top end....

I think is was partly the luck of the draw TVR Beaver.

But there a number of other factors, case hardening, follower quality, type & quality of engine oil used, & I believe most importantly how the car is used.

Interestingly I was told by Piper there were known quality inconsistencies with followers in the mid nineties.

The man from Piper was very insistent that the well documented cam wear issues on the Rover V8 were largely down to poor quality induction hardened followers, & not the cam.

Here's what I think adds to the issue on a TVR:

A lot of our cars get very infrequent use, a cam that hasn't turned in months & months may well get dry.

It's that first turn of the key with dry lobes that does a cam no good at all.

As always, regular use its best.

I've had a Kent 885 fitted by Power as part of an engine re fresh, still under 2000 miles done, hav'nt really pushed the car yet but it seems that more air is getting in there! Now I'm also driving it daily and barely get past 2000 revs pottering along at 50mph ( speed limit) two 10 mlie journeys to work, real gentle like, is that good or bad for the cam/ engine, with this cold weather I can't bare to rev her! Should I be a bit harder, I'm sure the cam was bedded in nicely at Power! Everything's bang on, working perfect, just want to do the work justice. What's the way! Cheers Al

Your all such a bad influence. Have you seen my driving!!! I'm sure theres something wrong with the car, keeps sliding when I introduce the throttle! Lol I've been fooled by the car, it's not that fast, but sideways all the effing time feels like 300mph. I'm inspired I'm off to loose my licence!!! Dom fitted a new chip, , I really want dry grippy conditions to feel it out, seems intense, in this weather I'm feeling like "the Six Million Dollor Man" moments (before he crashed) doomed. Lol fell in love with the car, love at first sight, she screwed all my mates for a year, bust my heart, now she wants to marry me and have my babies!! By hell does she look good and by ech does she roar. Yep she's my Valentine again!

I know I know, can't flaming wait, I'm trying to get a noise check over the wk end! Compared to a car fitted with R1R's mines a live wire! I've realised my helmet is a motor cycle one, not fire proof. I really want harnesses fitted, its going to be next year before I'm on the ball!!!!! Hey the funs in getting there! Back to topic, pardon me!! Knocking the tops off, is that because Captain Slow driving does not splash enough oil up or another reason!

Alun, drive it like you fking stole it,don't fart about, just remember if you are unsure get straight before you really hoof it,when you get used to it you can kick the arse out at every oportunity, you got no driver aids, makes it easy, they will only bite if you do something daft,I would rather throw a chimp about than a modern day tin top that cuts the throttle and flashes lights at you, as for the cam, that's had any bits knocked off within the first hour of running, as a very old friend said to me once,a faint heart never fk a fair donkey, just do it !

Helmet. I have three, I think I have already promised one loan, so still one spare, Snell 2005/2010 compliant. Size 59-62 cm. if your head, measured round horizontally one inch above the eyes with Mrs 450's (sexist) dress making tape measure is within those measurements, you are welcome to borrow one of mine.

Tyres - plenty of run off, have fun. It's not all about maximum grip, especially if it's not a totally dry day.

Harnesses - not necessary. Ordinary seat belt is fine.

Sheel your a barking nutter, wise man indeed. QBee will a steel tape measure work!!! Dress making tape, there's no dresses round here well other than the one I wear! Cricky I've just measured my head with a steel tape!!!! 59! Ok I'll hire it off you. Top man, I should be able to borrow one if so I'll let you know ASAP. It's funnyQBee every year about this time I get a nervous excitement, even years and years of not being around racing it still comes, now I remember just why! I'm pretty realistic, I'm gonna be slow, tyres/ wheels steering don't feel right, road tyres no grip, crapping myself but can't wait, I always came at it with I'm gonna win mode!!! Flat out! I feel so different about it now, I can happily tuck in behind someone. I feel I have a lot to learn. I like that! I drove some pretty quick carts 250cc blinding fast, wheels right in front of you, grip out if this world, TVR feels like a tank in size, that is what un nerves me. Hey anyone want a 125 6 speed gearbox Cart, 0-60 3 secs wait for it full brake set up 60-0 1.5 secs. Awesome, I worked out once I'd done 43 gear changes in a lap time of 45 seconds!???? Like old school F1 you virtually drive it with one hand, them were the days. Come on all you great Tvr Chimeara owners get signed up for Bedford and have a blast round, yeeeeeee haaaaaaaa, smash! What are paragraphs!
