Anyone?

Is there any chance a gearset might be made available?

I'd contact Readman Racing - John is the go-to guy for gearbox and diff' issues.

He does not supply parts, he only does rebuilds, I believe he does have some stock for his own use

I bought the last TVR 5th gear set he had several years ago, also got a good used input shaft off him too, you can't get them now either

I believe that ratio was used on some American muscle from the period. . .

https://www.ebay.com/itm/305415304162?itmmeta=01HR...

If you have yours apart - verify the specs with the seller.

Unfortunately that's not the right ratio and it's 28 spline, it needs to be 33/53 rather than 27/59

TVR for some reason used a 27 spline mainshaft, so you'd have to buy the mainshaft and propshaft yoke as well

Even buying used that would be another $400, and if it weren't in good condition it would be awkward to return

The Gearboxman quite often has used gear sets, he designed the Quaife gear set and rebuilds the T5 gearbox along with diff reconditioning.

He did a lovely job of my diff and T5 gearbox 18 months ago

And if you were going to swap the mainshaft for a 28 spline, you'd go for the heavy duty 5th gear set instead

I've got a Quaife gear set from him, that took a couple of years, but I haven't built the box yet

The mainshaft needs modifying in order to accept the revised fifth gear circlip, which I did not realise

I'll check whether he has any spare fifth gear sets, I think I did ask about five or six years ago and the answer was no

This is what happens if the 5th gear circlip lets go

That circlip is the only thing keeping the gear in place

That must be very disappointing.
Is there rotational pressures placed upon the circlip from 5th gear.
What causes it to fail.
Does anybody know and is there a stronger circlip we should be buying.

Can you recall how your were driving when it went
Flat out
mildly accelerating
coasting.

Have you managed to source one or maybe another gearbox you can take 5th from although mixing different aged gears together sounds far from ideal.
What a pain in the arse. frown

When I pressed on this replacement it was a much tighter interference fit

This was the last set that Paul Cangialosi had

Its helical cut so would imagine its always trying to climb off the mainshaft eek guess the circlip lost frown not a worry with straight cut gears except the racket ears

A friend of mine has straight cut 5th in his track Tamora, the noise it makes would be totally unacceptable in a road car

However, the heavy duty Quaife gear set, although noticeable at lower speeds in lower gears, is not particularly intrusive when cruising in 5th

Some versions of the mainshaft 5th gear have an indent cut in the rear face next to the circlip, this captures the circlip preventing it from opening

Sadly not all do, and the one that I had which did feature that design, failed because of the other weak point that is solved by using the billet bearing retainer that Paul Cangialosi supplies

I don't think there's a problem mixing different aged gears, my current gearbox is a true Frankenstein unit and is doing fine so far
