As I'm sure Spurting Bear (nta16) will point out, its a 'garage queen' and never goes anywhere.

It will once it doesn't vibrate!

Lovely old barge bow when Rover cars actually meant quality driving

Thanks.

Almost part of the family now. Was going to sell it 7 years ago when I bought the TVR but wifey wouldn't let me! smile

Two V8s - Oh go on then! wink

Same engine - cars are chalk & cheese.

Everything (execept the engine) is so damn heavy though.

Mind you the V8 lump is 200lb (that's 166.6KG for all you modereners) lighter than the original cast iron straight six that predated the V8.

Point of order Mr Chairman. Convention has it that we don't comment on bad speelink, but bad maths?
200 lbs is 90.7 kg. to get 166.6 kg you need to add VAT and TVR tax....

Oh bugger, yes! What was I thinking?

Remind me not to do the calculation on checking the preload.

Yeah, this one is four inches and that one twelve feet out.

Also messed about with a JE 'straight-out' thermostat housing as getting a tad congested now but needs a different style of stat as the one I have won't go under the cover (the bridge is too wide]
Gary, did you sort this. I have the JE straight but have problems with the car running cold so i am about to by a new 82 degree stat - from your post I am guessing it won't fit !

Just got home driving country lanes in a relaxed, "save my license "manner in the 5.5.

Air temp about 12 degrees I guess, water temp read 70, oil temp read 71 degrees, all as a reference.

Did a sprint day at Curborough. Not too many cars, so got plenty of runs in to test the new baffled sump. Car seemed to perform well, just three head-scratching moments:

1. My oil pressure (TVR gauge) did drop down to 15 psi once or twice, but no idiot light. It doesn't usually go that low.
2. On starting up after lunch I did get a small cloud of whitish smoke from the exhausts. Prior to lunch I had come off a run of less than two minutes duration and simply parked the car. Never seen a cloud like that on starting.
3. I got more, and louder, over-run bangs from the exhaust towards the end of the day.

Oil level at top mark. No leaks visible. Car ran fine. All gauges fine on the 70 mile run home.

On a lighter note, nice to meet Rib at the venue. He kindly showed me some different lines, and got within two seconds of my time having never driven my car before. I had a Santa Pod kind of a day, results wise - just couldn't get below the magic 1 minute 30 seconds on their new layout - best time 1:30.1

Do you have to conform to stringent rules for sprints ? Like harness and roll bar etc . Do you have to be registered with an organisation and have special insurance ?

The answer is that "it depends"

If you are going to do the TVR Sprint Challenge thingy that is featured in Sprint Magazine, then there are quite a lot of rules and requirements, enough to put me off from entering.

What I went on was an informal event organised by a group of young geezers and run once or twice a month. They simply hire the circuit from the owner, and charge £60 per car. It's very relaxed - Rib was able to drive my car with no charge and no helmet. As far as i remember, out of about 15-20 cars the only harness and helmet wearers were myself, a single seater race car and five Caterfields. One or two more had roll over hoops, the MX5 had heated rollers hehe, and that was about that. Everyone else just drove their normal road cars on road tyres and posted some pretty good times. Clios, Civics, and MX5, an MR2, Mark One Golf, Mark 2 Golf and so on.

There is nothing to hit at Curborough (Google it if you want to know where it is - it's just of the A38 between Burton on Trent and Lichfield), other than some low soil piles. The MX5 managed to run wide and go into a soil pile - front end into the air (all the hairdressing equipment in the boot made it rear end heavy, I guess), came down fairly hard and knocked the front splitter off. A true story of getting rid of split ends I guess. That's enough MX5 jokes - he was a really nice guy, MX5 Club Chairman i think, and took the hairdressing jokes with a grin. The only formality about it is the use of a gate onto the circuit, only opened to allow the next car out when the previous car had cleared the circuit. The young dudes were very careful about that.

We swapped cars, took passenger rides, took passengers, and had a good time. Very relaxed. Loads of people to chat to - your sort of event Daz. (and that's not being flippant - i think you would enjoy it)

Times - the hot 6 did around 1.22-1.24 for a three lap circuit. The GTR did 1.25, on standard road tyres - the acceleration was awesome, as was the handling.
I did 1.30.1, 1.30.8 several times, and a range of times up to 1.33 with a passenger. I was the best of the rest, so to speak. Other times ranged from 1.32 for the Nissan 350Z in my class, to high 1.30s /low 1.40s for the standard under 2 litre fare, 1.47 for a guy in his work's van, and 2.02 for someone's girlfriend in an unfamiliar car at Sunday afternoon pace. It's nominally done in classes so that you can compete with similar cars.

At the quieter times you get to run every 5 minutes, at the busy times the queue was about 15 minutes, but in both cases my 888s stayed up to temperature between laps. And by the way, Daz, there was a Caterfield on Federal 595 RS-Rs, like yours. He reckoned they were just fractionally slower than 888s, but half the price and pretty good on the road too. Having said which, he was the second fastest of the Caterfields, but they all had different kit under the bonnet. I think the fastest Caterfield was a Caterham R500, but I may be remembering wrong.

Bring your own bottled water and tools etc, no on-site catering, fish and chips fetched at lunchtime. If anyone is interested, PM me and I will send you the email link to the organiser.

+1 for Curborough Sprint Track day, I went at the end of last year (mid November I think). As Anthony said, good bunch of decent chaps (& a couple of no tails) and a variety of ages and cars. Altogether a decent day out & I believe usually a decent camera resulting in decent pictures posted on line somewhere (I thonk it's Rib aka Jony Ellis). I agree with Anthony (although I don't really know you all very well) I think it's worth a go at £60 for a bit of fun, especially if you're within 50 - 60 miles or so.

Patched up a couple of holes in one of the 'hockey sticks' and then found that both the cats are leaking. Ordered a set of de-cat pipes from ML.

Car a lot quieter though from just fixing the hockey sticks.

Funny, I put the cats back on Tamy and am now taking them off Samy.

Off to book a trackday in May.

Several of us are doing Bedford next Tuesday (MSV) if you fancy some company. And if you phone to book (0843 453 3000) and say the magic spell "TVR" they will give you 10% off
