Barry, that's what I did to two Pistons in my 5.0 when the timing was too far advanced.

That was caused by detonation, defo!

Thats almost certainly det damage frown and if that didnt get the motor Baz you were heading for big time head gasket failure look at that fire ring on the HG finding its way into the water jacket probably bought on by the same conditions frown glad you found it and it didnt do more damage but I would get the heads & valve seats inspected and make sure none of that piston shrapnel is laying in the intake

Yep glad there wasn't any more damage. The heads are being sent off to be worked on and refurbed. What is to be done to stop detonation? Where is the best place to buy forged pistons?

Finaly got round to stripping the engine down and found this plus another one with not so much missing. Good news is the bores are perfect. Happy that I have found the problem is only this as I was going to get forged pistons when rebuilding the motor.
Where are the bits that have broken off yikes
You don't want that lot smashing the turbo as well

The main reason for defamation is ignition timing to foo far advanced.

This should be set at 28°. When I broke two pistons on mine my timing was set at 32° and if you remember it was a really hot day at Shakespeare Raceway.

You can get away with running higher advance with the 4.6 engine as the pistons are much stronger.

Why not try Rob for a set of forged pistons.

Or try Andy at Chesman engineering, he does all the top hat lining and machining on these blocks.

Not from my garage, but from a spare room........and this is on the cusp of starting a complete suspension / wishbone overhaul!!

Santa come early - wishbone bolts, a shed load of bushes, new ARB bushes, braided hoses, new drops links, mirror mushroom that needs replacing, new engine mounts (spotted this when I changed the manifolds), headlamp refurb kit, new centres for the wheels I am having powder coated, a few new drive shaft bolts and a few more 'sundries'.......

And some done some painting.........

....from the courtesy of the spare bedroom........a little fine sanding to complete before final coat.

Wishbone bushes coming out of rear suspension assembly this week and then off to the powder coat-ers!! Woot!! biggrin

I plan to take pics on the journey and update for help to peeps who try this in the future........

PS - Who needs garages!!!

Been doing some cleaning of myself. Its 3 1/2 years since my body refurbishment and quite a few trips to France in between. I have removed the bespoke chassis guards and after a wipe down l was very happy to find nice shiny outriggers.

Loverly! I am stripping the suspension down and powdercoating etc - new bushes etc - not sure how much of the chassis I can get to with the body on though and all the suspension components removed...

From this:

to this:

Got the two sidelight clear lenses from:
http://dropzonemilitary.com/product.php?xProd=194&... for £8 each.

You will need some Sikaflex or other good adhesive to attach the lenses to the perforated alloy housing and of course 2 orange coloured bulbs.

The woven mesh I bought from:
http://www.themeshcompany.com/products/Jaguar-Mesh...

I used size 200 x 900mm which costs £27.99 +post +vat which is just under £37. With the original grille as a template I used quality side cutters (snips) to cut round but if you had access to a machine shop it would be much easier. The mesh is woven so moves about a little. I clamped it to the original with several vice grips.
Apart from wanting a more modern look to the front, the intercooler needs a good airflow so I think this will be less restrictive than the perforated alloy original.
