What did you do in the garage yesterday?
Discussion
I remember when we was kids, my best mate used to love thr Rover,,, my dad was a Jag man so I never looked at them much,, then me and the same mate about 18 years young saw a P5 coupe and this time I was hooked,,
Great great car to have a leasurly drive in, was it an Italian design,,, funkie as you like.
Your lights look great Alan, I'm getting temped, it's funny how gun metal and grey colours look brill on some cars and they look excellent on both of those two examples.

You've had me cruising on the sites looking at P5s and 6s,........again!

Lovely, ticks all the boxes. I'd have another P6B in a heartbeat; if I had a garage to keep it inYou've had me cruising on the sites looking at P5s and 6s,........again!

I had a 3500 Auto when I was 19, and also a couple of 2200sc's, brilliant cars
Still got a load of P6 spares...
That one is only about 8 miles from me...............
Many years ago my dad bought a new 2000TC. Doesn't sound much now but then it was so modern, fast and comfortable, I loved it.
In the first few weeks of ownership we travelled from Surrey to Newcastle up the newly constructed M1, absolutely fantastic cruiser compared to the FB Victors and the like we had before!

This P5 is more you I think, Peter......a new career?

Thanks All.
Have had the P5B 15 years and pretty much had every nut and bolt off it at one stage or another and had the Chim 10 years and actually done relatively little to it although I'm sure that will change over the course of the next few years.
If you are seriously considering a P5B Coupe then now would be the time to buy. They are just beginning to climb in value - Very slowly! I'm convinced they're waiting until the day after I sell mine.
If you need any advice on buying one Dave, feel free to give me a shout. I was hoping to have a chat with you about Ol' Gasbag at the Neil Garner open day but you hadn't arrived when I first wandered over to talk to the Lloyd boys and I ran out of time while Daz was with you until I had to leave.
Compared to my old garage (10 metres by 5 metres) this one is a bit cramped but I'm hoping to convert the carport once I'm earning again which will give me the whole existing garage as a storage for one car and workshop.
Nice one Alan, lets try and catch up at the next event and it'll be my pleasure to discuss 'Ol Gasbag'.Have had the P5B 15 years and pretty much had every nut and bolt off it at one stage or another and had the Chim 10 years and actually done relatively little to it although I'm sure that will change over the course of the next few years.

The crazy thing is on my way to the Nial Garner day I was telling my mate Frenchie TVR how much I wanted a Rover P5 and what good value they are when you compare them to say a Mk2 Jag.
Just like a Chimera is the very best value and practical British classic sports car, it's my belief if you are considering a 1960's luxury British saloon nothing comes even close to touching a P5 for value and practicality..
Even more insane is that if you'd come and stood by me and Daniel Lloyd from Lloyd Specialist Developments at a certain point on the day you would have overheard this conversation...
Dave says.. "Danny, I'm thinking bout buying a big classic saloon"
Danny says..."What are you considering?"
Dave says..."Have a guess mate?"
Danny says..."Rover P5"
Dave says..."No way, that's scary Danny how did you know that?"
Danny says..."Obvious really "
We then spent the next 10 minutes discussing and planning my Rover P5 project.
Which unsurprisingly goes something like this...
1. Fit a rebuilt and top hat liner 4.6 serpentine Rover V8 (280hp & 300ft/lbs build)
2. Mate it to a 4HP22EH or 24 EH 4 speed auto
3. Add an overdrive for a fifth gear & splitting the 2nd, 3rd & 4th at flick of switch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzmNPO0xUIo
4. Add the Canems dual fuel ECU to get it on gas (straight copy of my perfected 'Ol Gasbag' system but with bigger 80lt tank)
5. Retro fit climate control/air con
6. Brake upgrade
7. Add Range Rover ECU managed air suspension
8. Add speed sensitive electric power steering
Early calculations say cruising at 80-85 mph as I do in the TVR would give me the cost equivalent of 37mpg on LPG which would make it substantially cheaper to run than say a modern V6 petrol Jag XF.
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...
Faster too, and way way more interesting than modern Jag.
All my research says I can buy a top top quality P5B coupe for £12,000 and bring the complete comprehensive list of upgrades home for £25,000 including purchase price.
Now consider what you need to pay for a decent Mk2 Jag which will be significantly slower, worse handling, less comfortable and massively more expensive to fuel than my special dual fuel 4.6 litre P5.
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...
So a nice £10,000 saved to get the substantially better classic saloon you would actually use a whole lot more than the Mk2 Jag.
I firmly believe my sympathetically improved "Rover P5 for the modern world" project will make the worlds most practical classic performance saloon to whaft the wife and I down to the South of France in total cosseted comfort and epic style.
Devastatingly good value too
Not the route I'd choose to go with a P5B Coupe Dave but it would certainly make it a very usable car. I like them for what they are and not what what they could be.
Mine has a few updates. A 3.9 engine when the old one was in bad shape, electric fuel pump, electronic dizzy and a few other basic bits and pieces.
£12K would get you a good one but they are starting to reach into the £20Ks for top cars. Parts are beginning to become scarce and there are probably less then 500 left.
A cheaper option is the saloon which has certain advantages, the main one being you don't crack your head when getting in and out of the back.
I'm not sure about the big power and suspension upgrades. When all's said and done its a wafter not a racer.
Having said that:
A virtual pint for guessing the locations. And no, the MGB didn't get past. He tried a couple of times on a couple of the corners but couldn't get by as the B didn't handle any better than the Rover and the Rover was quicker on the straights with the original 3.5.
Wasn't the slowest up the hill either.
Just to upset Alun, who likes big steering wheels, I thought I'd post this.
The Mota Lita wheel makes it much nicer to drive long distances. You forget how the larger wheels with a hard surface was so cumbersome and highlighted the vagueness of the steering box.
The interior has been stripped out and I started a refurb just before I moved so I had to throw it all back together temporarily. Maybe I'll get chance to finish it next year. All of the 45 year old crumble foam has started to, well, crumble and turn to sticky goo so I replaced it all. Those seats are amazingly heavy and well built:
Sorry for derailing the thread.

The perfect stable mate for the Chimaera too
Busy weekend so chim stayed in the garage.
Not a TVR but a fun car anyhow.
Took the Wolfrace ProLite wheels off the Skoda and shod them with Federal 595s ready for a TD in November.
£303.00 for a set of 4 delivered and No3 son fitted them
£999 shed with £200.00 wheels from Skoda forum.
Already clocked up 3K in the last few weeks.
